LOS ANGELES — According to Bret Michaels, his surprise performance Wednesday night (May 26) on the “American Idol” season finale was much-needed musical therapy.

Anticipation built quickly in the audience when the familiar guitar chords of one of Michaels’ biggest hits with his group Poison, “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” began and he later emerged on stage with top-three finalist Casey James.

“I needed to be here and do this because it’s been two months since I played,” the rocker said backstage at the Nokia Theatre shortly after his performance. “It’s been a month and a half in the hospital. It was such an amazing feeling to come out here and jam with Casey. I didn’t tell [my doctors] I was going to do this. I just told them I was doing the ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ finale. They’re going to find out in a minute. But I feel great, I gotta be honest. There’s still a lot of pain I’m still experiencing. [But] except for a little hitch … my left side from the … stroke, I feel amazing.”

Last month the singer and reality show star was hospitalized for a brain hemorrhage and was rushed to the hospital again last week because of a “warning stroke.” On Sunday he appeared on the “Celebrity Apprentice” finale and was named the victor, and he says that he’s ready to hit the road again.

“I can’t believe my family let me out. I may not have told them either; I left a few things out,” he joked. “But I needed this for my soul. Honestly. It was a great experience.”

He said that he plans to perform again as soon as Friday in Biloxi, Mississippi.

“[I'm going to] do a few shows at a time. If it works out, great. If it doesn’t, I’ll start again,” he said.

Michaels also reflected on lessons he learned while hospitalized.
“I’ve always tried to treat people with respect and I’ve always tried to treat people great. I enjoy every day — every minute I’m here is awesome.”

Michaels joked that he wasn’t exactly sure what he would be doing, now that he’s won the title of “Celebrity Apprentice.” He also said that he initially didn’t know if he was hired or fired by Donald Trump.

“I leaned in and said, ‘Did you say hired or fired?’ I didn’t know what he said. I just jumped up. I thought, ‘Trump, you’re not going to fire me right now. I’m on medication. I flew a long way. Holly is amazing. She’s a fierce competitor,’ ” he said of his co-finalist, Holly Robinson Peete. “I didn’t ask Trump ‘What does being “Celebrity Apprentice” entail? Do you get paid? Is there cash involved?’ But what do you gotta do for him? Hopefully, you get to do a lot of charity fundraising. If that’s what it is, I’m going to love it.”

And as for that hospital stay?

“I’ve spent the last month and a half in the hospital. I don’t ever want to see a hospital again,” he said. “I just want to go out and have a great time.”

‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’: Behind The Song

Rock ballad Bret Michaels performed on ‘American Idol’ was Poison’s first — and only — #1 hit.
By Josh Wigler

Bret Michaels surprised millions of viewers, turning up on the season-nine finale of “American Idol” to perform “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” The guest spot was Michaels’ first major musical appearance since suffering a subarachnoid brain hemorrhage last month, followed by a series of health-related setbacks.

So what’s the story behind that song? To some, it’s a tune made familiar by star Miley Cyrus, who recently covered it. But for Michaels (and Poison fans), the song’s history runs much deeper. In an episode to devoted to him on VH1’s “Behind the Music,” Michaels revealed that he wrote “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” as a way to cope in the aftermath of his breakup from then-girlfriend Tracy Lewis.

According to the Poison frontman, the song’s titular rose represented his blossoming music career, while the thorn was a metaphor for how success had cost him the relationship with Lewis. Though forged from heartbreak, “Every Rose” ultimately rose to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for three weeks, from December 1988 to January 1989. It was Poison’s first, and only, #1 hit.

“Every Rose” became not only a commercial success, but also found a place within popular culture. The track played a memorable role in 1991’s “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey,” with the flick’s rock-obsessed idiots reciting lyrics from the song in order to gain entry to heaven. And Michaels collaborated with Cyrus for her remake of the Poison tune, which landed on her latest album, Can’t Be Tamed.

Of course, the song surfaced again during Wednesday night’s (May 26) “American Idol.” Singing the track opposite third-place finisher Casey James, Michaels provided his supporters with a powerful message: Just as “every rose has its thorn, and every night has its dawn,” Michaels’ troubles are coupled — and exceeded — by his triumphs.

Bret Michaels Performs On ‘American Idol’

Recovering rock star takes the stage with Casey James.

Bret Michaels on the ‘American Idol’ Finale May 26

Photo: FOX

After suffering a subarachnoid brain hemorrhage in April, discovering a hole in his heart earlier this month and beating out Holly Robinson Peete on “The Celebrity Apprentice” on Sunday, one would think Bret Michaels had gone through enough over the past several weeks.

Not so, apparently, as the Poison frontman surprised the masses yet again by appearing on Wednesday night’s (May 26) “American Idol” season-nine finale for an inspiring and rocking musical performance.

The performance began as third-place finisher Casey James took the stage, slowly strumming his rendition of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” Audience anticipation quickly built to a fever pitch as it dawned on the Nokia Theatre crowd and the folks at home that Michaels was about to grace the stage. Sure enough, a healthy-looking Michaels appeared with guitar in hand, gradually making his way to stand side-by-side with the clearly enthused James.

In light of Michaels’ recent health scares, the lyrics to “Every Rose” suddenly took on new meaning: “Though its been awhile now/ I can still feel so much pain/ Like a knife that cuts you, the wound heals/ But the scar, that scar remains.”

But Michaels wasn’t dwelling on any scars of his own. Strumming along and singing as loudly and proudly as ever before, the rocking Poison musician more than held his own on the “American Idol” stage. In a night already filled with many unforgettable performances, Michaels’ appearance was undoubtedly one of the evening’s most powerful and uplifting moments.

Slash Is ‘Flattered’ That Rihanna Channels Him In ‘Rockstar 101′

‘It brings an element of sexuality to it that I probably wouldn’t have been capable of,’ Gun N’ Roses axman tells MTV News.
By Kyle Anderson

Rihanna can always be counted on to deliver killer hooks and sexy looks in the eye-popping videos that accompany her chart-owning singles. The just-premiered clip for “Rockstar 101,” off her smash ‘09 album, Rated R, is no exception. The visual casts Rihanna as the frontwoman for a rock band whose members include Blink-182 drummer (and friend-of-everyone) Travis Barker.

Perhaps the most striking image comes during the song’s breakdown, when Rihanna appears dressed as none other than iconic guitarist Slash. And it’s a fitting homage, as the former Guns N’ Roses axman provided the track’s signature riffage. But the original concept didn’t have Rihanna putting on a gender-bending performance.

“I was supposed to actually be in that video,” Slash told MTV News. “I played on the song, and they called me up to ask me to play in the video, but my record was just coming out, and I was sort of worn thin,” he explained. “She was really sweet. She sent me this pleading text to come do the video, but I couldn’t make it work. I told her that me not being in the video wasn’t going to make or break it.”

So what does Slash think of Rihanna’s pantomime-like depiction of him in the clip?

“The video is way better with her being me than with me being me,” he said. “All things considered, it brings an element of sexuality to it that I probably wouldn’t have been capable of. I think it’s hot, and I sent her a text this morning telling her it was definitely hotter with her doing it than with me doing it. Everything works out the way it’s supposed to.”

Slash admitted that he hadn’t heard back from her yet, but their easy relationship is one of mutual admiration: Rihanna is a huge fan of Guns N’ Roses, the singer told him, and Slash was way into “Umbrella.” “I don’t come from that side of the fence, but I particularly liked [Good Girl Gone Bad],” he said.

Although he couldn’t make the clip’s shoot, Slash told us he feels pretty good about the outcome.

“I’m way more flattered that she played me in the video than her asking me to be in it,” he said. “All things considered, she’s pretty cool.”

Did you think Rihanna’s “Rockstar” take on Slash was spot-on? Or does she need to work on it? Let us know in the comments!

Bret Michaels To Undergo Heart Surgery This Fall

‘It’s gonna be a smooth operation,’ the ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ winner says of his hopes for the procedure.

Fresh off two unexpected emergency visits to the hospital, “Celebrity Apprentice” winner Bret Michaels revealed Monday (May 24) that he’ll undergo heart surgery in the fall to repair the recently discovered hole in his heart.

Speaking with “Access Hollywood,” Michaels said the surgery would occur once he’s completed taking current medicine to recover from the subarachnoid brain hemorrhage he suffered last month.

“What they’ll do is, they’ll go in and they’ll do the heart operation in the fall,” Michaels revealed. “They have to let everything clear out, and then they’ll go in and do the operation in my heart, and then I’m gonna be great. I don’t have any other options except to think that it’s gonna be great, it’s gonna be a smooth operation, and I’m gonna feel awesome.”

Despite protests from his doctors, Michaels appeared on Sunday night’s live season finale of “Celebrity Apprentice,” where he was crowned the winner. “Yes, it’s been a risk, but I wanted to be here,” Michaels said of his decision to appear at the finale. “I came to win, and I’m glad to be on the show.”

Winning “Celebrity Apprentice” is far from Michaels’ greatest recent victory, as the Poison frontman beat the odds by surviving the unanticipated hemorrhage in April. On the “Today” show, Michaels revealed his current medical status. “This is the truth: I’m not back 100 percent yet, but I’m one of those guys that I have to have a goal, and I’m very driven, and I say this truthfully, I love life,” he said.

Slipknot Bassist Paul Gray Dead At 38

Slipknot bassist Paul Gray — one of the group’s founding members — was found dead in an Iowa hotel room early Monday morning (May 24), according to reports. He was 38.

The Des Moines Register reported that police were called to the TownePlace Suites hotel in Urbandale, Iowa, shortly before 11 a.m. after an employee discovered Gray’s body in a room. There was no evidence of foul play, police told the newspaper, but the investigation is ongoing and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday. A toxicology test will also be done to determine any contributing factors to his death.

A spokesperson for Slipknot’s label, Roadrunner Records, confirmed the report to MTV News.

Gray, better known as #2 or “The Pig” because of the mask he wore while performing with Slipknot, helped form the group in 1995, along with current members Shawn “Clown” Crahan and Joey Jordison. Though the band’s lineup shifted over the years — with members departing or switching instruments — Gray’s position within the group remained constant: He was the only bass player Slipknot ever had.

The group would release four albums, the last of which — 2008’s All Hope Is Gone — debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart. They spent most of the next year touring the world before taking an extended break at the end of 2009. Earlier this year, Gray announced that he would be using the time off to play with hard-riffing supergroup Hail!, featuring Tim “Ripper” Owens, Megadeth’s David Ellefson and Sepultura’s Andreas Kisser.

In 2003, Gray was arrested on drug-possession charges after police discovered small amounts of marijuana, cocaine and two syringes in his vehicle following a traffic accident in Des Moines. Those charges were eventually dropped; Gray admitted he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident.

Bret Michaels Wins ‘Celebrity Apprentice’

‘If it’s sympathy [that helps me win,] I’ll take it,’ Michaels joked on the live finale of ‘Celebrity Apprentice.’
By Jocelyn Vena

Bret Michaels

After what has been a difficult few months for Bret Michaels following several health scares, the Poison frontman came out on top as the winner of this season’s “Celebrity Apprentice.” The show’s “boss,” Donald Trump, explained that it was Michaels’ “amazing” creativity and imagination that brought him to the finals, noting that Michaels has “a lot of guts” after battling a brain hemorrhage last month and a warning stroke last week to appear at the live finale of the show.

The rocker faced off against fellow finalist Holly Robinson Peete, who was competing on behalf of her charity, the HollyRod Foundation, for autism. Michaels was working for the American Diabetes Association to raise awareness and funds for a disease he’s suffered with since he was a child.

The cause became even more personal for Michaels, who had learned that his daughter, Rain, who surprised him with a visit during his last task, is “borderline diabetic.”

In their final competition, the contestants had to come up with a new Snapple tea flavor. Peete came up with “Compassion Berry” and Michaels with “Troparocka.” Each finalist had to market their new Snapple flavors with a print ad and a TV commercial. The winner would win the coveted $250,000 prize his or her charity. But before the show went live, fans got to see how each of the campaigns turned out.

“Bret is tremendously creative,” former show competitor Darryl Strawberry said in the pre-taped portion of the finale. While Michaels opted to make two commercials, Peete and her team focused on just one. The unfinished product didn’t impress Trump’s daughter and fellow judge, Ivanka.

“To become the Celebrity Apprentice, you need to be smart. You need to be driven and you need to have great hair,” Trump joked before cutting back to the pre-taped segments of Peete and Michaels completing their final tasks. Although both Peete and Michaels worked down to the wire, Michaels, who had to work on his commercials down to the last minute without a script, said, “That’s the story of my life: live without a script.”

“Right before it’s time to go up, my heart is kind if pounding. But I do know how to impress executives,” Peete said in pre-taped footage before she made her presentation of her final product. Peete’s comical spot showed Snapple scientists as they invented Compassion Berry flavored Snapple.

“As a rock singer and performer, you riff off the energy in the room. When you’re given a microphone and asked to talk about a brand … a whole different animal for me,” Michaels said about his commercial, a fast-paced, comical clip featuring Strawberry.

In the final boardroom, Michaels and Peete sat down to discuss their task with Trump. Michaels defended his decision to make a diet, sugar-free drink, explaining that the drink is a fitting one for diabetics. Peete, meanwhile, had to defend her choice not to use any of her celebrity pals in her commercial, saying she wanted the focus to be on the charity. In the boardroom,

Trump seemed to favor several of Peete’s decisions for her campaign, though he seemed pretty even-keeled in his feelings about both campaigns.
Trump pressed former contestant Olympic swimmer Summer Sanders about who she wanted to see win. She flip-flopped her way through the conversation, reluctant to choose, but noted she wouldn’t mind if Michaels won.

In the finale’s last half hour, both Peete and Michaels joined their past “Apprentice” contestants on the stage live. Wearing his signature bandana, a vest, jeans and a dress shirt, Michaels graced the stage with his characteristic good spirits, saying, “Let’s have some fun.”

Trump asked Peete why she was crying after Michaels entered. “Well, I mean, who in America isn’t [crying]?” she responded.

The conversation quickly turned to Michaels’ condition. He explained, “They did a great job. I was really fortunate. We reacted quickly. Great medical team and good people and I cannot thank you and your family [enough] for all the well wishes,” he told Trump. “I’ve become like a medical experiment. Its been crazy for about a month and half. Yes it’s been a risk, but I wanted to be here. I came to win and I’m glad to be on the show.

“Here’s what I was going to say: She’s playing the hotness card,” Michaels joked about Peete’s sparkly silver dress. “If it’s sympathy [that helps me win,] I’ll take it. I came here to win. I went in there to win and did everything you asked me to do. I will put my heart and soul into everything in the end. I did want to win but I didn’t want to cut anybody’s throats to do it. I always give everything I got 100 percent. I came here to win.”

Peete, however, made her intentions clear that she too wanted to win. “Well a lot of people know or don’t know that Bret and I became very close,” she explained. “There’s no animosity. We talked after every show. So when I heard [about his hospitalization], I was devastated, like we all were. I’m just overjoyed that he’s here, and we all love you Bret. … Yes, in a way, I feel like I lost my momentum. It’s Bret mania. That said, I really do feel like I did a good job.”

Moments before the winner was declared, it was announced that Snapple will match the grand prize, so both charities will get the $250,000 donation. But only one person can be named the Celebrity Apprentice. And this season’s celebrity apprentice is survivor Bret Michaels.

Slash Promises Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver, Solo Songs On Tour

‘I’m really excited, because we’ve got a great backing band and a great frontman,’ Slash says of Myles Kennedy.
By Kyle Anderson

Considering how long he has been around and the sort of people he has hung out with and places he has been, you would think there wouldn’t be a whole lot that would throw off Slash.

But when it came time to plan a tour in support of his recently released self-titled solo album, he was a little perplexed. After all, he couldn’t recruit all of the top-shelf talent who provided vocals on Slash (including Kid Rock, Ozzy Osbourne, Fergie, Chris Cornell, Adam Levine and Dave Grohl).

Luckily, he took a chance that paid off. “I auditioned a lot of singers for Velvet Revolver and a lot for this new tour,” Slash told MTV News of the jaunt, which kicks off Friday night (May 21) in Walker, Minnesota. “I had one song left on the album and didn’t have a singer for it, so I called Myles Kennedy out of the blue. He sent back this amazing vocal for a song called ‘Starlight.’ ”

Kennedy, who was previously the singer for the Creed fallout band Alter Bridge, immediately clicked with the veteran guitarist. Naturally, that led to the birth of their touring together. “I don’t know if I coerced him into doing the tour or if he really wanted to do it, but he was onboard,” Slash joked. “I’m really excited, because we’ve got a great backing band and a great frontman.”

Though he stuck mostly to a bellowing baritone with Alter Bridge, Kennedy’s singing with Slash is “much bluesier,” according to the guitarist. That’s good, because he’ll have to tackle a wide variety of styles. “It’s a pretty killer set list,” said Slash, who has done time in a number of different bands, all of which will be represented on the tour. “We do five to six songs off the new record. And we do a handful of Guns N’ Roses songs, a lot of which I haven’t played since ‘93. And we do a few Velvet Revolver songs and a couple of Snakepit songs. It’s a really energetic and vibrant set.”

Bret Michaels Back In The Hospital

A test finds a hole in the singer’s heart.

Fresh from a healthier-looking appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”following his hospitalization for treatment of a brain hemorrhage last month, rocker Bret Michaels is back in the hospital after complaining of numbness on the left side of his body in his face and hands.

According to Michaels’ website, doctors described the symptoms as a Transient Ischemic Attack or warning stroke. While performing MRI and CT scans, doctors conducted ultrasound tests looking for blood clots — specifically an Ultrasound Bubble Test of his heart — which proved positive for a Patent Forum Ovale, or a hole in his heart.

Michaels’ neurosurgeon is quoted on the site: “There is no doubt that the positive Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) is devastating news to Bret and his family. The good news is that it is operable and treatable and we think we may have diagnosed the problem that caused the Transient Ischemic Attach (TIA) or warning stroke; however we feel it is highly unlikely this is connected to the brain hemorrhage he suffered just a few weeks earlier. Once again it is great that he quickly reacted to the severe numbness and got to the hospital immediately.

“I realize Bret wants to make a full recovery so that he can be active with his family, attempt to attend the finale of ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ and especially get back on the road to continue making music,” Dr. Zabramski continued. “Without a doubt he is very determined to get healthy and make a 100% recovery. Medically speaking it is a fantastic attitude both mentally and physically for him to have. However, Bret’s brain and body are not quite 100% yet, especially with the hole found in his heart. Further tests will be conducted throughout the week and I will have more information next week as to how this Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) will be treated. For now, Bret will be treated with outpatient care, which includes a daily injection of Lovenox (a blood thinner to reduce the chance of blood clots) and blood tests.”

Michaels’ rep, Janna Elias, added the following statement on Bret’s behalf: “Bret wants everyone to know he cannot thank you enough for all of the well-wishes, prayers and good vibes you have sent his way. Even though these last few months have been tough on him and his family, especially this most recent setback, he is in good spirits, great medical hands and is positive and hopeful that everything is going to be OK. He is up, walking, talking, continuing his daily rehab and very happy to be alive, but he has made it clear he is sick and tired of being in the hospital and is ready to rock again.”

It was unclear what day Michaels entered the hospital or whether this latest setback will affect his scheduled “Celebrity Apprentice” appearance on Sunday.

Bret Michaels Tells Oprah ‘I’m Just Very Thankful To Be Here’

‘The only thing that matters right now is taking care of my family,’ he says in his first TV interview since brain hemorrhage.
By Josh Wigler

In his first television interview since suffering a serious subarachnoid hemorrhage, Bret Michaels appeared live via satellite on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on Wednesday (May 19) to discuss his medical emergency and subsequent recovery.

“My life didn’t flash before my eyes,” Michaels told Oprah about his experience. “It wasn’t like, all of a sudden, a rerun of my life. What happened was, I got very sad. I went into completely just asking God, ‘You have to let me through this.’ ”

Michaels said that while he prayed to God, he didn’t necessarily hear back. “I was doing a lot of asking at that point,” he explained with a laugh. “I know I’ve done a lot of rotten things, but I’m asking for a break here. If you could cut me a break just this time, I promise I’ll be better in the future.”

In a video segment, Dr. Joseph Zabramski said that Michaels’ condition was very serious when he first arrived to the hospital. “I tried explaining to him what we would be doing, and he was really unable to stay awake,” he said. “It’s really quite a miracle that he’s done so well.”

Zabramski said it’s still unclear exactly what caused the hemorrhage, but added: “The chance for re-bleeding is really no higher than anyone else in his age group. I think this is more common than people realize.”

During his struggle, Michaels said his thoughts were affixed on “what matters most,” including his kids, family, best friends and loved ones. His career was not on his mind. “The only thing that matters right now is taking care of my family, my kids, and I thank God I’m still around to talk about it,” he said.

A photo revealed that Michaels was still wearing his trademark bandanna throughout his ordeal. “It’s like Superman without the cape,” he laughed when asked why he continued to wear it. “If I’m going to go out, I want to go out rockin’!”

Michaels’ family and friends appeared in pre-recorded video messages to discuss their fears and wish the Poison rock star well. “I just want to say hurry up and get your bum back to L.A., because your sugar mama needs you,” said Sharon Osbourne, Michaels’ co-star on “The Celebrity Apprentice.” “I want to give you a great big hug, and I want to see those gorgeous blue eyes of yours.”

“The scariest part was thinking that my dad could die tonight,” Michaels’ daughter Raine recalled. “All these memories went flashing through my head of him. My first time on stage with him, my first time singing in the mic with him, my first time playing basketball. To think my dad wouldn’t be growing up with me or walking me down the aisle for my wedding was really heartbreaking.”

Michaels teared up after both segments: “I’ll tell you, I said I wasn’t going to cry. That got me. I got the lump in my throat.”

Michaels revealed that he’s asked his doctors to increase his rehab sessions to twice a day. Currently, he’s having trouble moving in his lower extremities, his neck is very stiff, and he continues to have headaches, though those are getting better with each passing day.

“I don’t know what the reason is just yet,” he told Oprah of why he got a second chance at life. “Whatever or whomever blessed me, whatever guardian angel I had when I think of all the crazy, crazy things I’ve done in my life, I’m just very thankful to be here.”

What did you think of Bret’s interview with Oprah? Let us know in the comments.
