Sweet, of course. I was surprised to see that there was any question, once I read the answers and choices. All are great bands, but some listed, are hardly considered as glam rock. I can understand though, the nod to Marc Bolan or Slade, yet I see Sweet as the kings of glam rock. Cheers.

I choose Queen well because I love Queen. Alot of my favorite bands site their major influence as Queen, but I'd have to go with T Rex and Bowie. They really were the ones to bring glam to the forefront. I am not discounting Sweet, Slade or the Dolls at all, don't get me wrong, every band listed had a certain influence. The only one I don't get is ABBA weren't they a pop disco band? To be honest I have never heard ABBA because my dad made our home a "disco free" zone even not allowing my mom to bring home disco records.

Just to expand on that I remember Paul Stanley one time saying how they were going to market their new band Kiss and him and gene went to see The Coop and said "Alce blew us away, why cant there be 4 Alices on stage at once" Hence Kiss' image was born!

"As for Alice Cooper, he was a shock rocker...really nothing to do with glam in my opinion."- seattle1014

Tell me this isn't glam:

To me, glam rock is about gorgeous long-haired guys (and girls too) wearing makeup and outrageous glittery outfits, playing hard rock.

it never occurred to me at the beginning of this that we could be on about influencing other bands..i just assumed it was influencing the public...because with those 2 separate things in mind, the answer can certainly be very different.

I would also have to give Kiss the nod on this one. No band was as over the top as Kiss was. If you have seen them live, you can attest to that. As for Alice Cooper, he was a shock rocker...really nothing to do with glam in my opinion.

Yet again it's vote for your favourite band on the list of contenders.
Kiss, Queen[definately], Van Halen = FUCK OFF just for starters.
Bolan, Bowie is the true start of Glam Rock very closely followed by Sweet, Gary Glitter and the rest. No way did Queen or Halen have anything to do with the Glam era.
Alvin Stardust [Shane Fenton in the 60's] don't make me laugh, three good chart singles that's it?
Most of the time bands just copied the pioneers and maybe took it one step further but they're just copying the godfathers of TRUE Glam Rock.
Marc Bolan and David Bowie.
Sweet and a few more just took Glam to the next totally over the top level.

"Wicked Lester 'aint Kiss?
That could mean Sweet started out in 1967 then but they were'nt called Sweet?"
- panasonicq

That's what might be believed, but Gene had ideas like that which happened to lead to KISS. Same with SWEET starting, but not called "SWEET" until later.

"67- they were in Sweetshop stage...until someone else decided to take the name and claim it...so it became The Sweet...and those were the days of Frank on guitar....but fuck me if i know who Wicked Lester is/are!!!"
- AniseedRock22350

AR, I posted mid-page on page 2 of this thread, about "WICKED LESTER", from the info I got. Like I had said, a friend of mine is into anything KISS, even if it's remote from the band, or it's beginnings for the major players as we know them.

I listened to the CD my friend gave me..... I sometimes have to wonder about Mr. Simmons..... he makes me shake my head and giggle.

Everything considered, KISS is the biggest influence. From Paul Stanley's big hair to the rock anthems to the pyrotechnics to the arenas to the attire......I always thought of the 80s arena rock/hair metal/glam rock - whatever you want to call it - was an extension of what KISS created.

I can't stand them, but I don't see how there can be any question about it being KISS. Just on record sales alone, but then factor into how many bands, especially during the 80's, named them as a major influence. Whereas one band might say "Sweet was the main influence" and another might say "New York Dolls were a main influence", both bands would eventually get around to saying KISS. KISS was probably on every single bands list. Maybe not at the top, but they were there.
