Yeah it did sort of overstate the queerness slightly, but people were pretty experimental sexually in the 70s.
Angie Bowie allegedly caught David in bed with Mick Jagger, and Bowie had the whole "fellate the guitar" thing with Rono.
Then there was Jobriath and Wayne/Jayne County.
From what I gather, Glam did make things a bit easier in the 70s for some of the kids who actually were gay.
And genderbending was a big part of the thing, they don't always go together, but generally if you're a guy in makeup, somebody's gonna make assumptions.

I was pretty sure that was Killer Kane rather than Billy..

Niki:Velvet Goldmine is great, and I highly recommend it.
The plot is a bit nonlinear, as it goes back and forth from the 80s, the 70s, and at one point, a mythical depiction of the birth of Oscar Wilde.
But the basic plot revolves around a British reporter working in America who's assigned to investigate the story of Brian Slade(obviously based on Bowie) a 70s Glam star with the alter ego of "Maxwell Demon", who eventually became his own character and was assassinated onstage.. and who, as it turns out, the reporter idolized as a kid, but he feigns ignorance when assigned the story.
Eddie Izzard also has a great bit part in it as Brian Slade's sleazy manager(is there any other kind?), and Placebo shows up as the "Flaming Creatures" playing 20th Century Boy.
Don't look to it for a fully "true to life" history, most of the characters are composites, with a LOT of overlapping: Brian Slade=Bowie/Bolan/Jobriath, Curt Wild=Lou Reed/Bowie/Iggy Pop, Jack Fairy=Bolan/Iggy/Reed(...maybe a little Warhol?)...etc.
But I think it captures the mythical essence of Glam in many ways.

I keep meaning to buy this movie....maybe next paycheque..
I used to have it on VHS, but the tape got eaten or something..
Also:GREAT soundtrack! Some Glam classics, some imaginary Glam classics, and some classics covered by modern bands replicating the Glam sound.

The guy second from left in the pic motleyguy posted is Arthur, not Billy. Billy had dark Bolan-ish hair, with a round-ish face. There's a pic of him in Nina Antonia's Dolls book.

Yep! It's got Ewan McGregor in it.
It's about a couple of 70's glam artist called Brian Slade & Ewan plays Kurt Wild (love the names!!)

The movies got all the stereotypes of glam such as the sex, drugs, bi sexuality etc.. It's got so many glam references in it, but I totally forget what it's about! I remember it being a bit disjointed and hard to understand. I don't remember it being at the theatres, I think it came straight to VHS here in Australia.

I have the VHS copy, and I am at home tonight, so i think I'll dig it out and watch it!!

Yeah, he's buried in an unmarked grave there, S-man. I'm not sure why he drowned/passed out in the bath. Some people say he drank himself to death (no big surprise there) and some say he took pills with booze. Some say he's not dead! Now, that part's just a little too spooky for me to think about.

I'm not too sure that there are any people who are unaware that glam originated in the 70's!?!? I'd say the 80's saw the advent of 'Glam Metal' as opposed to 'Glam Rock'
2 Who had three hits in 1973? That could be anyone: Sweet/Slade/T-Rex/Queen/Gary Glitter...maybe they all had 3 hits in '73??
3 Mick Ronson, from Bowie's Spiders replaced who? To the best of my knowledge Ronson was the original Spiders guitarist, having been with Bowie before 'Ziggy...' was written. So I'm not sure who he replaced? But Rick Wakeman was in the band until just before Ziggy, but he was keys, Ronson was always the guitarist.
4 Who did CBS pay £25,000 in advance for a song? That would be Mott The Hoople for 'All The Young Dudes'
5 Who had the two of the most popular cult records in history? This one is WAY too vague to take a stab at! More info as to where you're coming from with this question!
6 Who drowned in a bath? I can only think of Jim Morrison, but I'd like to be enlightened on what impact he or the Doors had on the glam movement. If there is anyone Glam who drowned in their bath, I'd like to know!
