I took my 5 year old to Rocklahoma with me. She loved it. She waz singing along while standing on top of a picnic table doing some awesome air guitar. She fit right in and loved every bit of it. She kept pointing out guyz with long hair and asking if that waz one of my GR friendz.

When I was a kid my dad was in a glam band and my mom was areligious. It was a constant pull by either side, my mom wanted to protect me by what she deemed "unwanted influences" and my dad wanted to expose me to this cool fantasy world of Rock. But my mom tolerated my dad going on tour in hopes he would hit the big time and she respected my dad's dreams. My dad had a extensive record collection which my mom tried to keep me from, but the more she kept me from it the more I wanted it. My dad would have me listen to his stuff when mom wasn't around but she knew I was a lost cause around 11 and totally gave up when I was 12. I wasn't killing anybody or robbing any banks or landing in prison so as far as she was concerned I could listen to whatever I wanted to. I was shoplifting from candy, grocery, music and liquor stores though but it wasn't because rock told me to it, was because I had no money and wanted stuff. Never got caught. Of course I don't do that anymore. I think by my experience you can only protect a kid for so long, he or she gets older and you have to kind of let it go at that. But I do think a parent has a say in how their child is raised, teaching them certain things about life, etc. Thats all and good but sooner or later the kid no matter how sheltered will go out and find what he or she wants. I wouldn't play my music around my little sister, she wouldn't get it and it wouldn't be fair. Some kids are more mature then others and it all depends upon that to expose kids to movies or music. If their taught right they will do right, no matter what they listen to.

"OK, here goes. Kids should be able to listen to any music they want within reason. The stuff with extreme lyrics and harsh messages should be controlled or limited until they are teens, but by then in today's society there is little point in trying to shield them any further.
I think the real danger of some media messages is that kids and teens develop the idea that they understand things they cannot understand, things most adults do not truly understand. The result of things like this become evident when certain things happen. For example, On 9/11 One of my friends was in high school, and they started watching the news in class. When the second tower was hit, one of the kids said "cool". To this person it was a special effect. This person's parents may very well have tried to limit his exposure, but it did not help.
Instead of preventing exposure to these things, parents should expose themselves to it, and discuss them with their kids.
And yes, I do have a kid, and yes I do practice what I preach"
- BaitingMaster

I remember I was on school camp on 9/11 and we were just channel surfing through the news stations to watch the planes crashing into the towers and the towers falling down.

Totally agree - shielding kids from things will just make them unable to deal with them when they finally meet them.

My parents don't mind what I listen to or watch, in fact my dad comes to loads gigs with me and has done since I was about 12 or 13. (cause there isn't really anyone else round here who likes good music)

my mum flipped when i was jamming to Fuck Like a Beast, by W.A.S.P. in my room, she got pissed when i wanted to go see them in march...that never happened =(

i had to beg to see Motley Crue this July, its coming up! and I am so stoked.

she doesnt really care that i listen W.A.S.P., KISS, Crue, New York Dolls or GNR, she used to question my sexuality, asking if liked men in drag!

She also let go of how I think Columbine, Charles Manson and the Holocaust are interesting. Its not like i support these, but they are interesting to get more info on.

But either way, i dont kill people, but i do listen to some heavy hair metal whenever i can...everyday, all day if i could. Kids should be able to listen to what they want, and a certain age, its like drugs...if you can handle yourself and not hurt yourself or others, i really dont see a problem.

My mom used to monitor what I listen to until last year, when I was 13. Then I got to listen to whatever I want. I still don't wanna listen to songs that swear all the time or talk about killing people non-stop, but if there's just a little of it, I don't mind. Again with what "cruehead138" said. I play Grand Theft Auto a lot and I don't swear, all of my friends swear, but I don't. I get called names for not swearing or watching porn with my friends, but I still don't do it. Its a personal choice. Sure, role model's help in the decision making, but its a personal choice to do or not to do things like that.

That sounds pretty good Lori!! I think your right about it all, about it depending on the maturity of the child. In fact, if anything it isn't the music that effects some less-mature people, it's they're peers. I think the best thing for a younger kid is to pay attention to they're peers. If you think that perhaps they are/will be a bad influence, you may want to talk to them about it. honestly though, banning your kids from talking/hanging out with a particualar person or group it makes them want to be with them more often, so talk to them about it first. I hope this helped. --baby bear

Well, I have a 5 year old. She listens to "my music" all the time. She loves it. She does not use foul language, in fact if I do she corrects me. So glad she can't f'n read yet. I am a strong believer in parental moderation. I know what my kid watches, what she listens to, and what she does on the internet. (yes, she is 5 and I let her on the net) When she does these things, we watch, listen, or participate in what she does. It is nothing for her to be listening to a Warrant song with me and her to stop and say,"Mama, you gotta call Jani and tell him it's not nice to talk like that" Then we talk about it. I was not an angel growing up, but, I'm not going to lie to her and pretend that I never did some of those things. This is a very mature site. We have a lot of teens on here, and they are usually very responsible in the way that they act. I have to give their parents a thumbs up for taking time with them. If it wasn't their parents it was someone. . . . It is when kids start using slurs against others and trash talking that I get pissed off. I respect everyone on this site, have no major issues about anything. I can agree to disagree and leave it at that. Having said this, it would be awfully nice if some people could show the same level of maturity that my 5 year old has. What kids listen to has to be based on the maturity level of the child. There are things that I will discuss and let my 5 year old listen to that I wouldn't think of letting some pre-teens I know even close to. Besides, if something isn't taboo from the beginning, it isn't as much of a thrill. ie. what is the big deal of drinking when you are 20 if you've always had it as an option? I will hush now. . . . -- mama bear

I think it just depends. I've never really believed in censoring what the kids hear as far as cussing goes, because frankly, they'll hear it at school, they'll hear it at the store, they'll hear it anywhere they go except church, and I've even heard it there before.

I can see if you start noticing changes in your kids from being allowed to listen to the music. I've known parents who had to start enforcing a "no rock" policy due to the way their children behaved after listening to the music. Their children settled down and started acting appropriately and that was the end of it.

But it depends on the kids. My friends and I listened to that stuff all the time and never acted terribly at all. It just depends on the kids and the situation. If I had kids, they would be allowed to listen to what I listen to.

i'm 14, and my parents don't really mind me listening to this music, but they are worried if it'll effect me on my language (and parents..honestly, it has) and if i'll support a crude lifestyle, but it hasn't effected me badly other than style and language, so i just say mabey to refrain your kids until you feel they would be exposed to cursing with or without this music. But yeah, you could try and find some cleaner things for them to listen to and slowly make a transition to the fouler stuff

Ok. I am 11 years old and I can prove any of you censorship freaks wrong. I watch south park and family guy. Also I play Grand Theft Auto daily. So you can imagine that cussing is what I often hear. But they are WORDS. Probably, the reason kids swear is because adults make such a big fucking deal about it.
And adults, you are so quick to blame everything on everyone but yourselves. For example (off subject of swearing) you are taking such a big stand against the "terrorists" in Iraq who killed thousands. Well America killed millions. Does that not make us more of terroists than them? Also, you people take kids much less seriously then we deserve. We somehow have less of minds, less capability of understanding then you people. Well in my veiws, in many ways, kids think more logicly. Because of what you call "innocence" in a derogetory and dismissive way, we, in your eyes, are incabable of understanding things that we take a negative veiw on it.
It is not that we are incapable of understanding things, it is that WE DON'T THINK WITH OUR WALLETS.

Also, you talk at us, not to us, constantly selling kids lies.

By the way, sorry about how long this is, but when I get started on something, I make a big rant about it. Lol. Well, see you on the forums

I don't have kids, but my best friend has a couple, and I'm the godfather of his daughter.
He really hasn't shielded her from much language-wise,and she knows that certain words are best not to be used around certain people. Actually, she rarely cusses even around her dad and I, even when we egg her on.
When that "Selling Ass For Heroin" song from Syndrome Of A Down comes on, she'll use the word "donkey".
She's good people, and she'll be a designated driver for me in about 5 years..

My daughter Tabatha has been listening to metal since she was in the womb. Her middle names are BlueJean (as in the Bowie song) and Araya (as in Tom). If I want her to go to sleep, I turn the music up louder. It's in her blood. To me, well, swear words are still just words, and if there is no mystique about them, it's not going to be so much fun to use them. She doesn't swear much, and she knows that sometimes and some places it isn't appropriate to swear at all. The only word I absolutely will not tolerate is the 'n' word, and she hauls people up on that one if she hears it.

As for television, I pretty much let her watch anything, barring real full on violence and South Park. When she was little I even let her watch that, but now it's a bit hard to explain so that's off limits. But if anything is 'objectionable' I watch with her. I think that she is going to be exposed to shit everywhere she goes, so I'd rather watch things with her so she's able to ask me questions and be made to understand. We watch a lot of comedy, things that she probably, according to your PMRCs and the like anyway, shouldn't watch, but man, her sense of humour is amazing for a six year old.

I'd also like to add that she is beautiful, athletic and incredibly intelligent. Turning out pretty damn good for an unbaptised child who is daily exposed to the devils music

As I've said before, my dad had my brother and I listening to KISS since forever.
Funny thing about that is, I'd sing along to the songs and enjoy the music (this is when I was 4) and not actually know what the song was about
Come sing with me! you got got.. nothin' to lose

I dont have any kids yet, but, when i was small almost all i heard was rock and glam, and i didnt turn out too bad. yes i swear, but around here, that makes me an angel! my younger brother and sister quite like glam too and neither of them copied the language. I think that the kids reflect the parents and if you watch your language and dont be too explicit then your kids will follow, seeing as kids look up to their parents, even if they would never admit it

I let my boys (2 and 6) listen to my music all the time. I want them to know the stuff that I grew up with. They are welcome to listen to whatever they want, although I'd prefer that they didn't listen to rap.

I was in the car one day with my younger boy and Ozzy's Crazy Train came on and in the beginning when he was saying "I, I, I" my son was singing it too. It was the cutest thing.

maybe if i was offered a winning lottery ticket.....but....swearing and sex has always been there in the music...but nowhere near the extent of today.

i've always listened to my mums music...it's how i like such a wide variety....and it's why i'm part of this website...because her CD collection had the answer to my question.
