It was a constant pull by either side, my mom wanted to protect me by what she deemed "unwanted influences" and my dad wanted to expose me to this cool fantasy world of Rock. But my mom tolerated my dad going on tour in hopes he would hit the big time and she respected my dad's dreams. My dad had a extensive record collection which my mom tried to keep me from, but the more she kept me from it the more I wanted it. My dad would have me listen to his stuff when mom wasn't around but she knew I was a lost cause around 11 and totally gave up when I was 12. I wasn't killing anybody or robbing any banks or landing in prison so as far as she was concerned I could listen to whatever I wanted to. I was shoplifting from candy, grocery, music and liquor stores though but it wasn't because rock told me to it, was because I had no money and wanted stuff. Never got caught. Of course I don't do that anymore. I think by my experience you can only protect a kid for so long, he or she gets older and you have to kind of let it go at that. But I do think a parent has a say in how their child is raised, teaching them certain things about life, etc. Thats all and good but sooner or later the kid no matter how sheltered will go out and find what he or she wants. I wouldn't play my music around my little sister, she wouldn't get it and it wouldn't be fair. Some kids are more mature then others and it all depends upon that to expose kids to movies or music. I think your right about it all, about it depending on the maturity of the child. In fact, if anything it isn't the music that effects some less-mature people, it's they're peers. I think the best thing for a younger kid is to pay attention to they're peers. If you think that perhaps they are/will be a bad influence, you may want to talk to them about it. honestly though, banning your kids from talking/hanging out with a particualar person or group it makes them want to be with them more often, so talk to them about it first. She listens to "my music" all the time. She loves it. She does not use foul language, in fact if I do she corrects me. So glad she can't f'n read yet. I am a strong believer in parental moderation. I know what my kid watches, what she listens to, and what she does on the internet. (yes, she is 5 and I let her on the net) When she does these things, we watch, listen, or participate in what she does. It is nothing for her to be listening to a Warrant song with me and her to stop and say,"Mama, you gotta call Jani and tell him it's not nice to talk like that" Then we talk about it. I was not an angel growing up, but, I'm not going to lie to her and pretend that I never did some of those things. This is a very mature site. We have a lot of teens on here, and they are usually very responsible in the way that they act. I have to give their parents a thumbs up for taking time with them. If it wasn't their parents it was someone. . . . It is when kids start using slurs against others and trash talking that I get pissed off. I respect everyone on this site, have no major issues about anything. I can agree to disagree and leave it at that. Having said this, it would be awfully nice if some people could show the same level of maturity that my 5 year old has. What kids listen to has to be based on the maturity level of the child. There are things that I will discuss and let my 5 year old listen to that I wouldn't <strong>think</strong> of letting some pre-teens I know even close to. Besides, if something isn't taboo from the beginning, it isn't as much of a thrill. ie. what is the big deal of drinking when you are 20 if you've always had it as an option?
