I really liked Van Halen 'in the day' wasn't a died in the wool gotta have all their tracks fan, but did like them. Has anyone seen David Lee Roth lately? I heard he was back with Van Halen now! He and Eddie must've made up? And touring again? Wow, dude is odd, however, no question he sure knew how to be a 'front man' and put on a show, he was one of the first I remember being really ''out there'' when preforming. What do you Van Halen fans think? The band better that he is with them again? Or did you like Van Halen better when he was 'gone'? I personally haven't heard any of their new stuff with David back in the fold.

David Lee Roth always seemed pretty cocky and arrogant to me, but I don't know if that whole feud started because of him or Eddie VanHalen. I was surprised to hear he was back with them. It can't hurt though. In my opinion it was their early stuff that really made the band, and DLR was the voice of VanHalen. Hopefully he's still got the voice (even if the looks have long since faded away). The most disappointing thing I've heard about the all new VanHalen is how they axed Michael Anthony and replaced him with Eddie VanHalen's (and Valerie Bertinelli's) son Wolfgang. He's a 16 year old kid, he doesn't need to be touring with VanHalen.

Just read a review of their first concert back the other day. Looks like they are going to do really well on this tour.

It is great to see them back! Roth is one of the (if not THE)greatest frontman ever!

It's a moot point as to whether Dave or the VH Brothers started the fued - their egos are all as big as each others, but let's just hope they can keep from each others throats long enough to continue the tour, and maybe let it extend to a world tour. Here in Oz we never got to see Dave with Van Halen, we only got the lamer Van Hagar version.

I agree that Wolfie should not be there. He's too young and doesn't need all that shit that goes with Van Halen. When they do start to argue (which they will) it will be 3 Van Halens against one Roth...

I didn't know the boy was on tour! Anyone know about his musical ability (if there is any)? I just don't think that's the best enviroment for a kid ! yeek..... Surprised Miss Valerie allowed this...maybe no choice. She and Eddie did divorce didn't they after about 20 some years of marriage? Think Eddie finally cleaned up though didn't he? Did he have a battle with prostate cancer?

I think the disease affected his tongue as he had some of it chopped out. Not sure what it was called but it didn't affect his prostrate.

Also, it is fantastic that he made a full recovery from it. Eddie Van Halen is a living legend and looking at the pic on the first show of the current tour, he has pretty much still got it even though his hair is short and gray.

Van Halen was good up until Diamond Dave left. That's the extent of my Van Halen fan days. David Lee Roth was the main reason for the good shows. He was right out front making it happen. Then there was Sammy Hagar...who didn't impress me - although he was (still is) a good singer. After that was Gary Cherone...a kick-ass singer, and excellent frontman...but really didn't fit in. I don't know what Eddie and Alex were trying to do playing "musical singers"...but it was never the same after Diamond Dave left.

Van Halen rocked bigger and better in the Van Hagar days. I know it's very glam but i enjoyed Sammy Hagar as a frontman much more.

Yeah I'm with you on that. With Sammy, musically they were so much more mature. Perhaps a little less riff and more melody orientated.

    Sammy

It's probably with Gary Cherone that they hit their lowest point. Great to see them flying high again.

Was reading Michael Anthonys' blog the other day. Seems that he and Sammy are still close buddies and currently on tour playing together.

No doubt that Hagar is a good singer, but he's not quite as ballsy as Roth. You could hear Van Halen (with Hagar) on the radio, on disc...whatever. But at he end of the day, the ultimate showman and vocalist for Van Halen was Diamond Dave. I feel bad for Gary Cherone. That man can sing loud, long and well. Just did not fit in with the rest of Van Halen. Queen should have taken him instead of Paul Rodgers.

Sammy is a good (and I admit technically better) singer and guitarist, but nobody can match Dave for his flamboyancy, outrageuosness and personality - He is the frontman from which all other frontmen are measured.

It all depends what you look for in a band (especially a 'glam band' as that's what we are all here for, I assume) Glam is all about the theatrics, costumes and androgyness -and the ability to pull chicks. - Diamond Dave's got it all.

Was reading Michael Anthonys' blog the other day. Seems that he and Sammy are still close buddies and currently on tour playing together.
Sadly it is Mikey's friendship and support of Sammy that got him left out of the current re-union...

I agree whole-heartedly. If Gary Cherone had the same energy (and the long thick, wavy hair) like when he made the guest appearance at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert, he might have had enough glam to front Van Halen. But his style does not match Van Halen. Roth's did. That's where they "messed up". Dave was....still is...a chick magnet.

Once Diamond Dave left Van Halen, they lost their glam.

It was interesting though, with Sammy at the helm, Diamond Dave was kicking their asses HARD. Eat 'Em & Smile / Skyscraper had bigger hits and more of them than VH's 5150 (which was awful) and OU812 which a shit hole album and was coincidently at the time when Hagar took over creative control of Van Halen.

Sammy might technically be a great singer and a guitarist but it's like listening to Dream Theater. Yes, great musicians but it makes my skin crawl it's so fucking boring. That's where Van Halen have been the last 19 years until this tour.

I love Van Halen. It was just one of those things like... "I heard about these guys, I wanna listen to 'em" so I bought one of their albums...I think the first one was their first album, either that or 1984. And I just loved it. As soon as I heard the first song I knew I was going to love this band.

Only like DLR though. I have nothing against Sammy Hagar as a musician, because I haven't really listened to his stuff, but I don't like his attitude, especially towards Dave. He came along and thought he was high and mighty taking Dave's place, and no one knew who he was. He had big shoes to fill and he was just a lil too cocky about it.

i had the pleasure of seeing vh back in the day as far back in'78, and always thought they were a great band. sometimes it can get frustrating that their heavier songs like on fire, romeo delight, house of pain, aren't their biggest hits, but to me, those are some of my favorite vh songs, and i hope they play 'em when i go see them. i'd rather they had mike back as they'd have needed him to do the high backing vocals, but you can't always get what you want. i can respect that wolfie is ed's son, but he's not an original member, and that's what a lot of fans would have wanted.

I grew up on Van Halen and have always loved them. I like both Sammy Hagar and Diamond Dave but personally I think you ain't got Van Halen if you ain't got Roth....I think when Roth was in the band everything was the best....even the music videos were better....Music videos with David Lee Roth are hilarious and 10x more funnier and cooler than hagar stuff....I always thought Eddie Van Halen was a fantastic guitar player...and Mike Anthony puts most of the groove and fun in Van Halen.

When my dad first played "Van Halen" on vinyl to me when I was 12 it was 1992. I was just blown away, when the first chords came on "Eruption" I was like "Holy God, Dammit Devil Dong!" I think I wore out the grooves on that vinyl playing it over and over. When my parents weren't home I'd open the windows and just blast it out! One of my neighbors across the street got pissed and told me to turn it down and in that case it went up! Boy did I get it from my mom when she got home but my dad mouthed "thats my boy". The first time I kissed a girl "Running with the Devil" was playing, that in my mind makes Van Halen one of my favorites. Of course I love Sammy but Dave was the one for me, he just had this arrogance and ego that came through his voice. Awesome. My favorite Van Halen albums are The first and Second. Love the song "DOA".

van halen just has to be one of the best glam bands ever! my mom introduced me to them. her name is jamie haha and people used to say oh oh oh jamie's divin' LOOK OUT!!! haha!! i do perfer DLR over sammy becuse even though eddie van halen and michale anthony are awesome, dave put in tons of creativity and flambouyancy into the band and i dont think they ever would have made it big if they didnt have dave and his imput. dave just does everything with such a abundance of energy and attitude and it makes everything better for a moment. i really like his solo work just as much as his van halen stuff. they videos are better with dave too.

absolutely one of the biggest glambands!

they have influenced so many bands!

because of the guitarplaying and David Lee Roth's way of working the stage!

I saw them play at their first reunion show with Roth on September 27, 2007 (RIP Cliff Burton who died on that day in 1986) in Charlotte NC and they were awesome. Eddie's solos were awe inspiring and they just freakin killed it. Roth kind of messed up on some of the vocals, but hey he hadn't played them in like 26 years. Diamond Dave even pulled out his katana sword to do some moves at the end of Jump; it was sick! They sounded great and I must say that Eddie's Eruption solo was so crazy that I felt like I had been teleported to another world. I have liked Van Halen for a few years now. I am very disappointed with the upcoming Guitar Hero game featuring them because it will not feature Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar. Don't get me wrong, the real Van Halen is the lineup with Roth, but they did have some good songs with Sammy. Leaving him and Anthony out of the game is ridiculous. Seeing the band in the game in the 80s with Wolfgang is so stupid. Of course Eddie is an asshole though so no wonder they re left out.

Van Halen is the GREATEST either way .
