OK, so, remakes are being covered in another thread, and Stanley mentioned Alright With The Boys by the Glitter Band.
The first time I heard that song, the main riff instantly reminded me of a later song that quite obviously took the main riff of the chorus, and used it to a very different effect.
So I was thinking that might make an interesting thread, Glam songs that borrow riffs, themes, and basic melodic ideas from earlier songs, and post-Glam songs that borrow Glam ideas.
    Here's a few:

    Bela Lugosi's Dead-Bauhaus >Alright With The Boys-Glitter Band
    Panic-The Smiths >Metal Guru-T. Rex
    Get It On-T.Rex >Little Queenie-Chuck Berry
    Starman-David Bowie >Somewhere Over The Rainbow-Judy Garland
Sharp Teeth, Pretty Teeth-Specimen >20th Century Boy-T. Rex
On With The Show-Motley Crue >All The Young Dudes-Mott The Hoople/David Bowie
    Liar-Sex Pistols >Puss In Boots-New York Dolls

There was a song by David Bowie "Jean Genie" that sounded like a song by the Sweet...I think "Blockbuster"...but Charlotte will know. I'm getting old.

ah yes...Jean Genie...i forgot about that...RCA's double releases...Sweet recorded in November and released in January...whereas Bowie recorded and released in December...there was also another song that used the riff...the riff was originally from The Yardbird's recording of Bo Diddely's 'I'm A Man'.

"Jean Genie" may have had the riff...but thankfully sounded nothing like the Sweet. David Bowie was very glam but as for singing, couldn't shine the Sweet boys' shoes.

to be honest...i have always found Bowie to be talented...but truly a kiss ass...trying to assume the throne of the glam kingdom...when it so rightly belonged to Marc Bolan...there were a few other glam identities on the scene before him.

I didn't mean to imply that David Bowie wasn't talented. He's very talented. But isn't as gifted as others ;-)

Oh wow! I'm not terribly familiar with Suzi, but I just looked it up on Youtube, and totally...that beat.
Works with Disposable Teens and Rock Is Dead too.

it occurred to me today...that i had missed something from this post...from the moment i first heard..Heartbreak Today by Sweet...i knew the opening riff...and when i can sing Alice Cooper to it, without bending any vocals...part of the intro to Heartbreak Today is School's Out...the "no more" sections.

Poison's Unskinny Bop intro is similar to Take That's Shine...and i did have one that sounded like Queen's We Will Rock You....but i'll have to get back to you on that one..because i forgot it...so i'll trawl through my iPod and find out what it was.

"Cherry Pie" has a sample from another Warrant song, too. "D.R.F.S.R." has the same chant at the beginning (minus the last word).

Yup...listened through my new tracks...it is Cherry Pie...i wouldn't mind, it's one of the tracks i most listened too, so it was right under my nose...i should've got that really.

...or not...as it happens, i re-ordered my iPod around, and listened through my tracks...and realised the one i meant was in fact Pour Some Sugar On Me- Def Leppard...there's a little bit at the very beginning that suggests We Will Rock You...but i missed Cherry Pie originally.

Mainly toward the ends of the songs.

Believe it or not L.A. Guns "Sex Action" from 1988 has similar riffs to GWAR's "Black And Huge" from 1990 :(

Don't forget the classic sample "Dr. Davis, telephone please. Dr. Davis..." that appeared on both Operation Mindcrime 1988 and Dr. Feelgood 1989.

I actually understand the Chuck Berry/T Rex thing because Marc loved old rock n' roll and rockabilly. In fact he got Gene Vincent's (of Be Bop Lula fame for all you non music nerds, it was a old old rockabilly song) old guitar. That being said The Cult's "Love Removal Machine" suspiciously sounds alot like the Rolling Stone's "Start Me Up".

The riff to Poison's "Nothin' But A Good Time" has always made me think of "Deuce" by KISS. :D

Sweet's Hellraiser > Stiff Little Fingers' Suspect Device

I only realised when I was learning Suspect Device. I wanted my band to cover both those songs - but they're practically the same!! That idea went down the toilet a little!!!
