It seems that the 70s & 80s gave rise to a style of guitar playing that was fresh, innovative, flashy and oh yes, highly technical virtuoso's.

Which guitar player do you like?

From my point of view, Eddie Van Halen has done more for the craft than the guy that invented the guitar (whoever that was). Eddie pioneered the way the guitar should be played in a lead sense. Tapping, sweeping, alternate picking and weird shit. He's got it all.

Syndrome, please stick to the parameters established in the poll. Polls are limited to 9 options, there are hundreds of guitarists, we know that. Also, your posts were bordering on personal and inflammatory. This is unacceptable behavior. The postings were moderated as per GlamRock.com terms of service agreement.

    Motleyguy,

Steve Perry was the frontman in Journey and had a hit with "Oh Sherrie" in 1985. Great song but not glam. Is it possible you have him confused with Joe Perry of Aerosmith?

Perhaps I am wrong because you seem to be polling recognized virtuoso's in which case I don't think that "Guitar for the Practicing Musician" or "Guitar World" ever featured Aerosmiths' Joe Perry in the virtuoso class.

    Sorry, admin.
    Sorry, Motleyguy - especially motleyguy.
I guess I was having a bad night, and it shouldn't have been your problem.
I guess I should stay away from posts and polls when I'm tired (and cranky).
I'm not the kind of person who makes crude remarks. Not my style.

This post will not be self-destructing as it is an apology.

Syndrome, I am humbled by your graciousness. Thank you.

The reason why this site exists so that we can share and learn from each other so that the knowledge base of glam continues to expand. The moment that stops happening, there no longer remains a reason to exist.

I would never hope for that to happen, admin. This is a fun site to visit. Again, motleyguy, I was not trying to attack your judgement. I was just not in a good mood. Very sorry to have been rude.

Once again, so many points to consider in making a decision!
    Eddy was the best.
Vai is a virtuoso of all styles, not just rock
Lynch, Bratta & Di Martini are all experts of their craft.

But my favorites were Richie, Slash and CC for sheer entertainment value and of course they had the most commercial success. CC wins me over though as the complete package!!

I am surprised to see less votes for Steve Vai. With the Grammy under his belt and the 7-string guitar, really surprised to see so few votes. :(

When it comes to song and giving it a killer solo which is melodic and adds to the overall intent of the song. For those types of solo's that fit that mold, are exciting, memorable, technical and raise the song to a new level....you can't go past Vito Bratta.

What he does in Wait and Little Fighter, has never been done before or done since.

All of those listed are great guitarists.
But I am going with George Lynch. He just took it to a whole other level.

aX : George Lynch is my second favorite guitarist of all time.

Met him about 8 months ago when he was doing a clinic. Super cool, down to earth guy. He's still got it going on and I'm not just talking chops. He's one heck of a confident guy.

That reminds me. Need to post this snippet in the who's got it and who's lost it thread.

Of the guitarists listed, I have to go with Slash! I don't like his work with Velvet Revolver as much, but he's still good.

But back in his GnR days? He had it all!

A unique playing style, awesome hair, and a friggin cool hat! Just can't beat that with any of the others on that list.

Probably at home in L.A. or on tour. Not too sure.

The poll is geared towards the virtuoso end. Mick while a solid guitarist, isn't recognized as a virtuoso as described by Guitar for the Practicing Musician. Just like Richie Sambora, Phil Collen, Paul Stanley etc. Great guitarists but not reknown.
