Boycotting this vote for the simple fact where the hell are T.Rex first band to release a glam single and first to wear make-up on Top Of The Pops so basicallly they are the true inovators of glam.

"Now LadyPeterBilt, you seem to post like you have this black & white definition of what GLAM is. Like there's something you know that we don't, we're a pack of idiots and you're the one that is sitting in judgment.
If you'd like to post that definition in words, on this thread, then that would be something that would be genuinely helpful."

I don't mean to come across as such, and I do appreciate the info on ABBA....... although back in the day, we actually considered them disco, not glam, and not on the same page as Elton John, Sweet, T. Rex or Alice Cooper.

Hell, there wasn't much to describe anything back then.... lol. We pretty had things cut and dried, and these days, it isn't.... no one ever over analyzed gernres. When I get a little sassy (or is that saucey) with my posts, it's just I am trying to understand what is being posted.

There is always much to learn, my dear Glamster...... and do not think you or anyone else is an idiot...... I am not "sitting In Judgement", just typing outbursts....... which I blurt vocally in real like, too (I have been told I might have a mild form of tureetes...... <-- not sure of the spelling)....... because my mind always tries to process more than it can handle at once.

Oh, and just for the record..... I see someone else wants to know where Cooper is too....... *wink* lol.....

"we all know i love Sweet...but unfortunately they weren't really influential...Marc Bolan started it...and Bowie stole it....but i think a lot of people around the world...young and older alike, recognise Queen....
for me...it was between Queen and ABBA."
    - AniseedRock22350

Well, technically T-rex and Bowie didn't have as much influence as people might think. The whole scene really stemmed from the Warhol crowd in the sixties, and both Bolan and Bowie didn't break through until quite a while after that movement ended. One of the very first bands to stem from the Warhol movement were Iggy and the stooges, who then went on to influence bands like the New York Dolls. Some people would say the 'Dolls were a big influence on glam, and they probably were, but after the rein of the 'Dolls, that's when punk really started. Music and fashion went right back to it's roots and punk rock was created.

Bowie kick-started his career in Britain in the mid-sixties, and was actually doing a lot of work with Bolan up until the mid seventies. When Bolan died in '77, Bowie shipped out to the US and began hanging out with bands like The Stooges and Johhny Thunders and The Heartbreakers. As punk got bigger, glam gradually died. The 'Dolls were the last great glam band of that era. Glam remained fairly stamped out until the late seventies/early eighties when a new wave of glam began, what we'd now call hair metal. This new wave of glam was led by 2 young Dutch boys, a californian bass player, and their eccentric, flamboyant lead singer; they were calling themselves Van Halen.

So that's who my vote goes to.

Definate Marc bolan, He had big influence on lots of bands, past and future
Marc started Glam rock and the rest followed suit.
And this is why we all love Glam-rock because of one man.

Okay, it took me much time and many beers to figure it out. Going back listening to some stuff, seeing videos and clips from the 70's and so on. I ended up ditching Bowie & Queen - thought I still <3 them, and went with Kiss. Gotta love that man and his crazy tongue!

Kiss would have been my LAST choice, they just jumped on the glam bandwagon. About 5-6 years too late!
Great band but last place just after Queen.

"While I love ABBA, I'm not sure why they're on this list, and Marc Bolan/T. Rex isn't..."- carroll13

You know, I have been trying to find the answer to that too...wasn't ABBA a disco band from Sweden?

They formed in '72, just a few moths after the Dolls.

Okay, 4 years too late! But what the hell it's all down to a simple matter of opinion.
Here in the U.K i'd never even heard of Kiss until around 1975?

    Ever hear of "Wicked Lester"?

Pre-KISS, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley were part of this band, and from November '71 to July '72, they recorded an album... twice, with 2 guitarists: first with Steven Coronel, and again with Ronnie Leejack.

There are a few songs from this recording session on the KISS box set.... but, thanks to a friend, I have a lot of what was recorded by both takes of this album that was never released. Gene and Paul didn't like how it turned out, and that's why it was never released, and there is no Wicked Lester album to be had.

(I had to dig this out. My friend included some notes for me, which is where I got this info... he's a major KISS fan.)

ANYhoo, although KISS probably wasn't, per-se, any real influence there (you guys got more Sweet than we did here, though), I think Simmons and Stanley were in the game, just not as KISS...

I dunno if you or anyone would like this stuff, though.... pretty *OUT THERE*..... :)

Good move Candy, musical tastes and a strong belief in a certain band you love is almost like trying to preach a different religion to another person who already has their own faith.
I LOVE ALL the bands on this site, it's just that [in my opinion] SWEET are the best.
Respect to all great glam/rock bands; A.Cooper, Kiss, Bolan, Dolls, T.Sister, Slade, Crue, Bowie, Tubes, and on and on......

I can't stand them, but I don't see how there can be any question about it being KISS. Just on record sales alone, but then factor into how many bands, especially during the 80's, named them as a major influence. Whereas one band might say "Sweet was the main influence" and another might say "New York Dolls were a main influence", both bands would eventually get around to saying KISS. KISS was probably on every single bands list. Maybe not at the top, but they were there.

Everything considered, KISS is the biggest influence. From Paul Stanley's big hair to the rock anthems to the pyrotechnics to the arenas to the attire......I always thought of the 80s arena rock/hair metal/glam rock - whatever you want to call it - was an extension of what KISS created.
