Folks, who do you think had more influence on the development of glam and post why you think that?

Collectively, they all did but some had more influence than others and for different reasons.

For example, I'm voting for Sweet. Their elaborate vocal harmonies not only influenced artists like ELO, Queen & Van Halen in their day and after, but followed through well throughout the 80s.

If there is someone I missed, please forgive me and don't forget to write a post telling us why they were influential.

Queen did it for me. Sweet was tough not to choose. I just recently read "Are You Ready, Steve?" by Steve Priest. They didn't start out to be a glam band, but after Steve found those outfits too fascinating to resist he kept the image alive. Freddie Mercury sure had the outfits and the stage presence.

My vote goes to the New York Dolls. They pioneered the 'tough' look to glam. Black leather, police caps, dog collars and pink feather boa's.

New York Dolls were definitely a cool band.

I cant vote this one, cant make up my mind between Bowie and Queen, both have good reasons, but without making an entire list of all the pros and cons, I'm stuck in a rut right now. Will need to debate on this and get back to ya. By the way, the harder the list, the better, I love a good challenge, even an internal conflict with myself. :)

It would have to be Queen!

Seriously, how many other bands can you think of which were such a huge influence on as many varieties of rock?

Many bands ranging from Rock,Glam,Metal, and more all cite Queen as an important influence in their development. Even bands you wouldn't expect to be into Queen!

    Hey there glamster....
    Marc Bolan.
    Left out Marc Bolan.
Sweet were always being compared to him and they DIDN'T LIKE IT EITHER.
Maybe Marc Bolan and T-Rex because they were so very early seventies, ya know?

I think the Dolls had more of an impact on the American scene which led to the sleazier version of glam metal in the 80's. T-Rex or Sweet would be fighting out for the main title of true glam

I would have to go with Queen on this one. Part of the reason could be that I still really like their music! Freddy Mercury has a great voice, but he was a real freak.

we all know i love Sweet...but unfortunately they weren't really influential...Marc Bolan started it...and Bowie stole it....but i think a lot of people around the world...young and older alike, recognise Queen....

for me...it was between Queen and ABBA.

WHY is Alice Cooper not there?!
I'd say KISS then. Even though it was Alice who influenced them.
Although, The Dolls were pretty influential too, they're also one of KISS's main influences..
But look, I find it bloody shocking that Alice Cooper isn't included. Go back and take another look at that long list of performers who owe a debt to Alice Cooper. Study it carefully, for they all had their greatest successes after the advent of Alice. David Bowie may have worn a dress on the cover of The Man Who Sold The World in 1971, but Alice had already flirted with transvestism in 1969. Marc Bolan admirably defined Gangster Glam on Bolan's Zip Gun in 1975, but Alice had already been there and gone by 1973. Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood may have refined the punk rock look in 1977, but guess who invented it by wearing S&M gear as well as the slashed 'n' shredded safety pin look as early as 1972? The freshly dug-up Gothic gloom 'n' doom look of Siouxsie And The Banshees? Alice. The grease-paint personas of KISS? Alice. The bloodletting of Gwar? Alice. Marilyn? Alice. Everyone else? Alice, Alice, Alice. Pink Floyd's Roger Waters put it this way: "No one in this band can play a guitar like Eric Clapton or a stage like Alice Cooper." Nobody ever before looked like him, sounded like him, or acted like him. And nobody could shred the speaker of an AM transistor radio like Alice Cooper. He was a first-class hit disturber--and his greatest class disruption exploded onto the airwaves in the summer of 1972 with all the subtle impact of ten fingernails shrieking across a classroom chalkboard.

I'm livin' in the 70s, I feel like I've lost my keys
I got the right day, got the wrong week
I get paid for just being a freak

I don't remember Brian Connolly prancing onstage in a cape and crown....as FM did...but the Sweet were special - very special!

From a visual standpoint, a serious case could be made for Kiss.Even musically, they were very influential. Although I still stand by my earlier comments about Queen, there is no doubt that Kiss was nearly as influential although in a somewhat different waty.

Brian was the least into the whole glam movement anyway....while Andy, Mick and Steve were prancing and going about under Andre, Michelle and Stephanie...he was breaking microphones with his knee...lol.

the whole point of the poll is to simply choose out of what is available....there is only limited space available for choices on a poll and can't therefore show all glam options.

"Then, praytell, what the hell is ABBA doing on that list?"- LadyPeterbilt

    Awww you're gonna love this.

Can't find it now but at the time, there was much discussion over Abba and the general consensus at the time was there was something glam about them.

    Please consider -

    Abba @ GlamRock.com

    LadyPeterBilt, it gets better.

Following on from the possibility that ABBA were glam, there was some debate about whether Elton John was glam. So before you tell us that Elton John ain't glam, read up
    http://www.glamrock.com/blog/forum/topic.php?id=95&page&replies=13

Now LadyPeterBilt, you seem to post like you have this black & white definition of what GLAM is. Like there's something you know that we don't, we're a pack of idiots and you're the one that is sitting in judgment.

If you'd like to post that definition in words, on this thread, then that would be something that would be genuinely helpful.

There can only be one, SLADE. IF it were not for the KINGS of Glam there would be NO Kiss.

While Slade's attempts at cracking the United States market were largely unsuccessful, they left their mark on a several US bands who cite Slade as an influence. Kiss bassist Gene Simmons readily admits that his band's early songwriting ethos and stage performance style was influenced by Slade. In his book "Kiss and Make-Up," Simmons writes on page 85, "the one we kept returning to was Slade," and "we liked the way they connected with the crowd, and the way they wrote anthems... we wanted that same energy, that same irresistible simplicity. but we wanted it American-style." Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick has said that his band went to see Slade perform, and that they used "every cheap trick in the book", thus inadvertently coining his group's name. Quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slade

I spent most of the early 70s listening to Slade Alive thinking to myself, "Wow - this is what I want to do. I want to make that kind of intensity for myself." A couple of years later I found myself at CBGB's doing my best Noddy Holder." - Joey Ramone (TheRamones)

Slade was the coolest band in England. They were the kind of guys that would push your car out of a ditch." - Alice Cooper

"Slade was never pretentious. It was just music to them. Pop, rock, soul....it was all the same to Slade. They wrote great songs. And, besides, I'd like to raid their wardrobe." - Noel Gallagher (Oasis)

"The whole punk rock thing really happened because of bands such as Slade and the like; rock bands that wouldn't back off." - Paul Weller (The Jam/The Style Council)

"Absolutely. Slade! A band that would never bend over." - Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)

"Whatever happened to bands that rocked liked Slade? Y'know, that no-bullshit, fuck you, in your face, we're bad-as-hell-and-we-know-it kind of band?" - David Coverdale (Whitesnake)

    Firstly, welcome to GlamRock.com

Secondly, thank you for such a fantastic first post. I've never seen anyone make such a compelling post to support their point of view. Thank you.

gjbrum...i like your slade blog...it's definitely better than the one i read the other week that reduced me to tears (that doesn't happen often)...i think i can safely say that the majority of the mainstream english glam came from Birmingham and the West Country...and i'm thrilled that come February i get some experience of the area for myself.

While I love ABBA, I'm not sure why they're on this list, and Marc Bolan/T. Rex isn't...
I voted for Bowie, because most these other bands owes something to his presentation of Glam.
Well, not so much ABBA, they were sort of their own thing..

...oh yeah, and where's Wayne/Jayne County?

"WHY is Alice Cooper not there?!

    ...also a fair question.

...although it should be mentioned that Jayne County would love to kick his Republican ass.
And while I understand her point of view(she's very politically active these days, and understandably sick of the GOP closet hatred show), Alice blew me away when I saw him a few years back.
Much better than I was expecting, theatrically and musically(I came away wanting to get songs I'd never heard before..Black Widow, Stephen, Born In Beverly Hills)....and it was pretty much free, so it was a good deal all around.
