    They're both amazing
and Slash was probably influenced by Jimi Hendrix,
but I'm gonna have to go with Slash.
I think he's so amazing and GNR is my favorite band.

    I never liked Hendrix...

They are/were both cool. But I'd have to pick Jimi Hendrix. He didn't copy off as many people as Slash has.

Wuut? They're from completely different era's.

Jimi was a way better technical guitarist, even though he was a sloppy player.

Slash is a great guitarist though, but a much different style.

My friends mother went out with Jimi for a few years and was close friends with his girlfriend when he died, trivia.

    Jimi, no doubt about it.
I don't know about that "sloppy player" allegation though.

nah..maybe not..but his talent was certainly quite a fluke...he was a pure imitation artist, but he could interpret and invent to stand out from the crowd. a legend for sure...not that i'm saying Slash isn't..but his name probably doesn't ring in as many ears as Hendrix's does.

i mean to be honest, if it comes to preference...i would've picked Slash. 8)

A pure imitation artist? I'd have to disagree.
He certainly took elements he'd heard from other artists, but then he mixed in dissonant noises that even many of his imitators are still afraid to try these days.
He showed possibilities for expression that guitarists previously hadn't imagined, and expanded the field for everyone that came afterwards.

No disrespect to Slash, but I've never heard anything innovative from him.

He had alot of control, but his playing style was sloppy. Good sloppy, not bad sloppy.

See also Eddie Van Halen.. great style, sloppy but.. sounds like the notes are flying all over the place y'know? But they're doing it just right.

A real strict playing style is like Jason Becker or something, everything being note perfect, perfect timing, perfect fingering technique etc.

Nothing wrong with sloppy playing when it's done with style!

I bet Slash could never play a guitar upside down though. Mind you, could Hendrix play one the right way up?

    He did...at least stringwise.
    I think.
I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he restrung his guitars so that the bass strings were on the top.

yeah he did...it was on 7 ages of rock...as was the part about imitation artist...i don't mean pure as in all he ever did...i mean pure as in the original meaning of the word...at least i think it's the original meaning.

I wonder why Hendrix turned his guitar the other way 'round, when he's right-handed anyway. And it's not like they didnt have left handed guitars then :)

I'm guessing it's because his right hand is stronger than his left.
Until I was indoctrinated the "correct" way to play when I took lessons, that's what I did too.

I have to go with Jimi, he just made his guitar sing and you could feel the depths he plumbed his heart for inspiration. Slash is just fucking amazing, the guy is a conductor of a orchestra on his guitar and he has me awe struck. Still though it is Jimi for me.
