If your getting started i would go for second hand. Thats always the cheapest and if you don't like it you can sell it for the same price.
Yamaha pacifica is quiet allright and cheap. the ibanez JS-100 is allright for a good price.

In a higher class price you can go for charvel so=cal, verry verry sweet! Also bc rich gunslinger is nice.

Jackson make some pretty good starter guitars aswell as Squier and Epiphone. These 3 brands also have a pretty good range for diffrent styles of guitars deppending on what you're looking for. Like others have said, Charvel is good, but expensive for a first guitar. If you're going to play rock, like I'm guessing you will want to, a guitar with humbuckers insteed of single coils (The pickups if you don't know what they are) will be better. The major guitar brand through the 80's with glam music was Kramer. Kramer still make guitars but they seem to be a bit lower quality nowadays if you wanted to have a look at them but I would rather go with a second hand Kramer that was made in the 80's if you wanted a Kramer. Alot of people also go for B.C. Rich as a first guitar but their not really that grate. So after my big ramble haha I would suggest a low end Jackson, a Squier, a Epiphone or a second hand 80's Kramer.

Try a Fender, they are a great start up guitar and was mine. Now I'm using an ibanez, my fourth or fifth guitar

If you really know that you are going to be playing guitar for a long time and have the motivation to put the effot in to actually get 'good' then I suggest not cheaping out on a POS squier or other 100-300 dollars guitar and going to full mile. I use a ESP M-1000 Deluxe and it has served me well, and it was only 1800 dollars haha. I recommend you get this guitar..

    kramer

    http://www.kramerguitars.com/Products/SM-1/SM-1-Seymour-Duncan.aspx

It is 1500 dollars but it has quality parts that won't break on you after 6 months of playing! It also has a floyd rose so you can do some awesome whammy bar dive bombs! Not to mention Kramer was the staple 80's guitar ;)
