Hey, I'm really into glam metal and this summer I'll be getting a new guitar. I don't want just any regular guitar from today though, I want something really glam metal from the 80's like an ibanez rg 550 or something of that nature, something that really stands out. With high output pickups and a Floyd Rose. I've got somewhat of the look with the tight jeans I wear and the way I do my hair but I need a real guitar to go along with it, I play a lot of Paul Gilbert and Eddie Van Halen type stuff. I was wondering if any of you know where I can get an awesome 80's guitar, or any suggestions of what kind to get. So far I'm looking at Kramer and Charvel.

I would check e-bay, but Admin can probably advise you better. He is our grand glam guitar expert.

you're spot on with Kramer bro, and for finding authentic 80's Kramers your best bets to keep an eye on the Kramer collectors forum here http://www.kramerforum.com/forum/ and obviosly ebay. Honestly? go for a Kramer Baretta, they're wonderful guitars, and you're bound to be able to pick up one with an interesting paint job. Although, admittedly, it depends how much you're wanting to spend.
much love

Hey guys thanks for the advice and I think I'm totally going with Kramer, I've had a Focus 6000 before and now that I think about it I'll upload a pic of me with it for my avatar. It was an amazing guitar, it was from 88 I think and it was red. I loved the Floyd Rose, I got to perform with it at my school's coffee cafe. The reason I don't have it anymore is because it was one of my ex's friends and so breaking up meant giving the guitar back lol.

Very cool guitar choice! I'm getting a new one myself soon. Nothing expensive, lol, but I want something more shred friendly than the strat knock-off I've got now. I'm pretty much set on a Vanguard-esque body shape.
Just curious to any of you glam guitar virtuosos out there, are any body shapes considered more glam than others?

Not a virtuoso but have an opinion on that GlamJam89.
I've seen everything from something as simple as an 'out of the box' Les Paul through to Explorer and Flying Vee shapes. That also includes strat style but other than Yngwie Malmsteen, I haven't noted anyone else playing a Fender Stratocaster either in standard or modded form.
As 80s glam was an era of technical guitar playing, the advise is to go with a guitar that takes less effort to play and holds it's tuning well. That's probably why Fender Stratocasters aren't used.
The most important things for playability are a wide, flat neck and a very low action with no dead notes. No non-locking trems, fixed bridge is OK but that will limit what tricks you can play. And definitely a DiMarzio humbucker in the bridge. Neck and middle pickups are unimportant as they are rarely used and you can get a neck pickup sound by using the bridge pickup with the tone knob rolled down, i.e. the intro of "Sweet Child O'Mine". Each sounds the same.
24 fret necks (Ibanez) are nice but 22 frets is enough (anything else, Kramer, BC Rich etc). I suggest maple fretboards over rosewood.
Color, anything but I suggest that you avoid black. Black is such an unglam guitar color.
To get a good, thick glam sound going, any digital multieffects until will do the job but lay off the reverb, chorus and delay unless you want that horrible European metal sound. Also, switch off all cabinet modeling.
Also, an decent amp set on a clean sound. I suggest that for distortion you rely on the multi effects rather than amp distortion. Just use the amp as a power amp.
Last thing. Use plectrums that are less than 1.0mm in thickness. It'll be easier to make notes squeal.

Wow, wasn't expecting such a complete answer! Thanks very much, really appreciate the quick, detailed reply. I mean, I didn't actually understand a lot of it, lol, but the most of it I can decipher! The guitar I'm currently looking at seems pretty up to standards, or at least as much as what I can manage to afford is gonna get me, lol.

May I suggest Dean guitars? I play a dean baby Z (cause I have itty bitty hands) they're beautiful, and the pickups are double single coil which give you the nice rich sound of a humbucker without the mudiness and without cutting the high end

You should get a Kramer Vanguard, or a BC Rich Warlock. I don't know much about the way they play but they are the coolest looking guitars out there especially for glam.

Posted 3 years ago # -
I'm not a bass expert...but Dean has some sweet Flying V basses, Explorer type basses and more. There's a lot out there, I've found a lot just looking for normal guitars. Just keep lookin' bro. You'll find something.

I've got a cheap version of the 70s Noddy Holder guitar, an SG model by Vintage Guitars. It really rocks. And of course I play along to Slade, too. And it earns me money when I teach guitar!
