Anybody else here have their favorite 80's albums in vinyl? I know I do, I absolutely love vinyl and always keep my eyes out for any obscure glam metal records. Don't get me wrong, I have a shit load of CD's just because their convenient to pop in the car or in my computer, but when I have time to relax or rock out, I whip out the power and put it on the metal plate! Anyone else with me?

Hell yeah, vinyl rocks! I love going in the second hand record shops and trying to pick up something rare, and you can often get nice ones off ebay :)

Yeah I actually like buying vinyl because its way cheaper. I picked up Quiet Riot's "Metal Health", Dokken's "Tooth and Nail", and Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast" all for a buck! They play fine and I find the vinyl sound alot richer and fuller.

Plus you get a proper sized album cover to look at, not some tiny CD booklet thing, and sometimes you get free stuff with vinyl, I've bought a couple of crue and cinderella records that have had patches or posters in with them.

Yeah you can actually see the artwork without squinting and you can even put it on your wall. There is much more to a vinyl guys, I agree.

Oh dude! Fuck! What a deal! Even if I didn't have a record player I would've bought it, just to have it. Don't mean to rub your face in it, but hey you can get a record player cheap. I got one from the 70's that works perfectly fine at Salvation Army for like 20 bucks, it even has a tape deck and a radio, it came with speakers too. You should look into buying one, you can maybe even find one cheaper than mine and then you can start buying your fav albums for way cheaper. The sound is fuller and richer too, you get a experience out of it, "Kill 'em All" would've sounded bad ass on vinyl. Thats cool though, keep in mind there is always next time.

If you have the cash it's really worth getting a decent record player and some good speakers, then you can hear the quality difference between vinyl and CDs :D

Yeah Techwreckie as soon as I can afford it I am going to get a new vinyl record player, been planning on doing that for a while now. The sound on mine is awesome, I've had it for a while and had to replace the needle a couple of times because I play the damn thing so much. Also alot of bands are re releasing their classic stuff on vinyl which is awesome. Dorkstarmy that is bad ass! I have Led Zep 4 on vinyl too among a bunch of others. Also you might be interested in this, I got Johnny Cash's first vinyl LP released on Sun Records "Red Hot and Blue Guitar" at a garage sale for 50 cents. The guy didn't know what he had, the thing is a little scratched but it plays which surprised me because most of my fifties vinyl pops but this one was flawless and great. Love the Knack too dude.

I don't have vinyl LPs anymore, and I regret now that I've sold them. If I try to find an album from the 80s, all you can get in record shops in the UK is Greatest Hits. I recently bought an album like this by KISS. I'd love to hear these odd songs as well that were on their original albums, but it can't be done. So maybe I have to hunt for an old second hand record player... and of course 80s albums.

I've got enough vinyl from BITD that it'd be a major investment to replace it all with CDs, anyway. I've got to admit I like not having the Rice Krispies, though, so I've made the upgrade on most of the albums that are really important to me (or bought compilations). But I'm looking at buying a new cartridge from Grado Labs (just affordable enough and made in the U.S.A.; you can get a really good one for about eighty bucks, and you can spend A THOUSAND DOLLARS on one if you really want to) so I could maybe feel OK about just keeping the vinyl.

I agree about the "experience" aspect of it, but I can see it both ways; especially when you've downloaded something, there's nothing between you and the music, kinda like hearing it on the radio. But maybe I just don't wanna feel like a Luddite. ;-p

"I have heard various sides to this question. Some say Vinyl gives off a more "rich and fuller" sound. Some say CD's give a more "clear and crisp" sound. I tend to think it also depends on what kind of audio equipment you own.
    Any thoughts??" - ABOVETOMMY

Being into music technology I can tell you that CD is a better format than vinyl from a technical point of view. The differences are far too complicated to discribe here. Wikipedia provides good reading on the subject: Analog recording vs. digital recording

My main reason for choosing CD over vinyl is the simple fact that playback never deteriorates from the day of purchase (providing you treat your discs with respect).

I also hate the hiss and crackle that vinyl provides by default. Another reason is the fact that many vinyl records drift, especially towards the end. This wouldn't normally be important but when beatmatching two or more songs it's a pain in the arse
