i've heard many people say that jimi hendrix was the best of all time i how ever strongly disagree...i say it was randy rhoad's above all other's...to me, his riff's and solo's have so much more energy and vibe....jimi hendrix isnt a bad guitarist but randy's a hell of a lot better in my eyes

I'm hearing you little buddy. Was having nearly the exact same discussion with my buddy Johnny Rayzor last nite over Digitech releasing 2 signature pedals. The Jimi Hendrix one and a Brian May one. The consensus is that we wouldn't want the Jimi Hendrix one.

My opinion for what it's worth is that Randy is great but was swept away too early to leave a significant impression. If he lived, he would have been the greatest.

However, and this is my opinion only, but Eddie Van Halen gets my #1 vote for furthing the cause of technical quitar more than anyone else. Vito Bratta is the greatest genius on the guitar but it was Eddie who had the greatest effect. The glory days of great guitar playing were 1980 to 1990. Driven by Eddie Van Halen & Yngwie Malmsteen,

I love Ace too, his solos are what I grew up (and still are growing up!) with.

Ace's guitar playing overall is pretty good. He carried KISS live because Paul Stanley isn't much of a guitar player.

It's always going to be a subjective thing when you put one artist over another, since it's music and not sports.
Different musicians play different genres, and some are masters of technique, while others are masters of emoting, etc..
So, especially for me, narrowing it down to just one is difficult, but I'd have to give honourable mentions to
Porl Thompson, East Bay Ray, Lee Ranaldo, Greg Ginn, Dave Navarro, Thurston Moore, Jimi, Mick Ronson, Robert Smith, Daniel Ash, The Edge, and Robin Guthrie. They all have unique approaches that make me feel something, and that's how I tend to judge.
As far as current innovators go, I haven't yet heard anyone surpass what Kevin Sheilds was doing in the late 80s/early 90s, although lots of bands have imitated that guitar sound since...and had more commercial success.

I don't think I could choose. There are so many bad ass guitar players but I'm probally gonna wait and see if some one comes out and happens to be better than everyone else. But since I can't really choose I'll just choose who I think is the guitarest who influenced a lot of the greats and that one guitarest would be Tony Iommi.

Vai, Malmsteem, Satriani all great players and had their own project going for a while. I remember watching that 80's movie with my dad "Crossroads" and I don't meant he stupid ass piece of garbage Dan Akroyd and Britney Spears were in, I mean the one where Ralph Macchio has a guitar duel against Satan's player which was played by Steve Vai. That scene was bad ass, Vai tore it up and reportedly also played Ralph's parts for him when they cut to his hands. He had to out play him to get his friend and teacher who was a blues guitarist's soul back. Great movie and I wish the makers would of sued that other stupid movie for taking the name and defamation of character!

Jimi Hendrix was the most groundbreaking musician perhaps of all-time. All the great guitarists bow down to Hendrix: Clapton, Page, Frehley, Kulick, Vai, Van Halen, Vaughn, etc, etc...

    2. Mick Mars
    3. Slash
    4. CC Deville
    5. Steve Clark
    6. Steve Lynch

The super technical players who play really fast and clean seem kind of boring to me usually.
