Wat's da difference? :: Heavy Metal 'vs' Glam Metal

My take on this is that Glam Metal is focussed on Image and lyrical topics mainly concerning Sex, Drugs (including booze), & Rock N Roll. I consider KISS to be the original purveyors of Glam Metal, which later evolved into what is termed 'Hair Metal', a lighter, more pop oriented form of music. You can usually tell that a band is Glam or 'Hair' by the inclusion of one or more ballads per album. Heavy Metal on the other hand has a more rough and ready Denim & Leather image, at least in terms of the 70s and early 80s output, and is lyrically concerned with war, violence, domination, the concept of 'True Metal' in opposition to false (glam/hair)metal and mythical beings. Whilst not much heavier than 70s glam metal (KISS), it is generally much heavier than 80s Hair Metal and the inclusion of ballads is unusual (pre-Metallica's Black album). This is all something of a sweeping generalisation, but might help to answer your question somewhat.

Glam Metal took some cues from Glam Rock, and fused them to Metal.
The guitar timbres tend to differ a bit, depending on the band, and Glam Metal bands tend to smooth things out in post production a little more and have catchier brighter choruses than regular Heavy Metal bands, who prefer a thicker crunch and operatic vocals.
Lyrically, regular Metal traditionally dealt more with the occult, or medieval epic type things...like Black Sabbath or Maiden, while Glam Metal was more about girls, sex, and swagger, but without the underlying subtle parody that characterized much early Glam Rock.
Regular Metal musicians tended(at least early on) to go for a biker influenced look, while the Glam Metal bands take more after the androgyny of Glam bands, but even in some Glam Metal bands, there's a bit of a crossover look...Motley Crue's Shout At The Devil look comes to mind....this is all pretty sweeping generalization on my part though...much like the post above it.
There's probably no real neat and clean way to delineate it.Posted 4 years ago # -
my understanding is that most heavy metal guitar riff's are alot grittier if you will then those of glam/hair metal...with acception from guys like mick mar's and randy rhoads...thier guitar licks are always really raunchy and aggressive....for example....james het feilds and krik hammet's opening riff's to such metallica songs as sad but true and enter sandman are very raunchy....but randy rhoads opening riff's to i dont know and crazy train as well as mick mars opening riff's to dr feelgood and/or live wire are also very aggresive.....and glammetalmonster's theory of glam focussing on image and lyric topics such as sex, drugs (booze) and rock n roll and hair metal being a more "pop oriented" style of music is 100 percent correct

Pretty much what the people above me said, so no need to repeat it.
But honestly, there is a really big difference.
Motley Crue vs. Black Sabbath. You should be able to see the difference.ADD ME ON MYSPACE! http://www.myspace.com/misty_riversPosted 4 years ago # -
Funny, some songs off of Black Sabbath's Born Again album (one of their forgotten albums, this one with Ian Gillian of Deep Purple on vocals), like "Digital Bitch" for example, wouldn't seem so out of place on a Crue album to me."Pretty much what the people above me said, so no need to repeat it.

Heavy Metal bands- really include bands like IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, DIO, BLACK SABBATH, MANOWAR, ACCEPT, GRIM REAPER,ECT.
Glam Metal Bands- really include MOTLEY CRUE, RATT, W.A.S.P., DOKKEN, KIX, GREAT WHITE, L.A. GUNS, TESLA, SKID ROW(through '95 they still kinda glam), ect. alot of these bands can be thrown in with heavy metal however
Hair Metal- to me are lighter bands than Glam like POISON, CINDERELLA, BULLETBOYS, WARRANT, DANGEROUS TOYS, WJITE LION, FIREHOUSE, ect.
Thrash Metal Bands- Include METALLICA, ANTHRAX, SLAYER, MEGADETH, OVERKILL, TESTAMENT, EXODUS, ANNIHALATOR, EXCITER, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, ect.

with glam metal everyone just looked really good with big hair and heels. and heavy metal has more of a drive to it. powerful stuff. but i love it both

I love all of it. I'm tired of the classifying crap. If it is good music, then listen to it. This having been said, I tend to prefer "Hair" Bands, but I have albums from every category up there. It also depends on which album of a particular band you are listening to. Many of them have songs that would fit into most if not all of these categories. Many artists started out in one and moved on to another. I will now hush -- Mama Bear

Glam metal are the party boys, heavy metal are the more serious musicians...LOVE 'EM BOTH!!

Well that is hard to say. In my opinion, it bleeds over in so many ways. Whereas glam is more party music, sex, drug and violence related, Heavy Metal has a different lyrical take. Though that isn't typical of all glam bands, they do sing and write about other stuff and the way they dress is a little different. But Metal borrows from glam, long hair, leather clothing etc. Some are more metal then glam but I think they pretty much are the same thing except glam is the sexy, bad sister and metal the wannabe bad boy brother, but their still siblings and their faked disdain for each other doesn't hide the underlying love they have for each other.

LOLSpelling elitism and Racism.
Anyway, I think our Ozzygurl was right when she said Glam Metallers were the party boys, and Metallers were the serious musicians.
It reflects in the lyrics especially!
Metallicas One:
"Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live"Motley Crues Girls':
"Trick or treat-sweet to eat
On Halloween and New Year's Eve
Yankee girls ya just can't beat
But they're the best when they're off their feet"

i dont thinks its a differnce in seriousness, i think its more of just what style of music the band wanted to play, you have to be serious about music or you will never get anywhere, and i know damn well more metal bands still partied about the same, wasp for example

- sam77Oh, ofcourse its serious. But I mean... A lot of the metally-metal musicians made political statments and tried to change things and took it all very, very seriously, whereas Glam, lyrically and musically, liked frivality and party-based lyrics.
When I said serious musicians, I didnt mean 'take music seriously' - I meant their approach to what music should be. In other words, style.
I'm agreeing, really, LOL.
