Personally I love the PBs and I have written quite a few with my band.... just wondered everyone's thoughts on them? did they genuinely ruin the 80s like some people say or are they as awesome as any rock song?

I think that whoever said they ruin the 80s didn't get a chance to listen to the best power ballads of 80s
I personally think they're awesome as any other rock song

Power Ballads are awesome!
They didn't ruin the hair metal genre in my opinion. The genre was ruined by crappy glam metal bands that were adequate at best(like Mr. Big, Firehouse, Enuff Znuff). They were a joke & made the genre a joke; ready to be snuffed out by grunge.
The Power Ballads deserve more credit than they get! They extended the shelf-life of hair metal by years. They became a genre within a genre! You don't see that in rock anymore. They just play a slow song every now and then.
They are the reason that people who aren't die hard glam fans even know some of our biggest bands! Lots of people have heard "Don't Know What You've Got(Till It's Gone)" by Cinderella, but have no clue they did great rocking tunes like "Shake Me" & "Gypsy Road". Tesla's probably better known for "Love Song" than "Modern Day Cowboy". Steelheart's "I'll Never Let You Go"...Most people can't name another song from them!
In some cases the ballads were the best music that some of the bands put out! Period! Great White's "Save Your Love" & "Angel Song" are amazing songs! That annoying song "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" is horrible!
POWER BALLADS ARE AWESOME! Thousands of lighters lit in unison (or cell phones these days
) can't be wrong!
