So ive been observing the world today. Has anyone noticed that the 80's are beginning to come back. Style is reverting to what was popular in the 80 slowly, music is getting even better and there are more Glam and Thrash bands appearing, and movies are getting better too. everything is getting better and beginning to feel like the 80's in my opinion. whats yours?

Yep, certainly noticed the revival of the 80s growing in the past few years. Not a fan of the newer bands, but it's good to see the old ones still going.
I just wish those 80s rock stars would focus their time and energy on creating new music and touring rather than the likes of Vince Neil, Steven Tyler and Bret Michaels doing reality show crap all the time. Imagine how much it'd suck if Motley Crue and Poison didn't start touring together because Vince was too busy ice skating (very badly) :P

I definitely agree. And a lot of the new bands out there may not have quite the same sound as the 80s bands, but they have a lot of same principals and its great to see it.

I agree with the reality show problem. If they all focused on new albums, we would have an awsome start to this decade with kick ass music from the great bands, instead of bad skating and judging and greatest hits albums lol

It's good to see! I'm not really into the new bands as much, but I do appreciate it.
Although it does bother me that leather and leopard print are apparently fashionable at the moment, I feel as though I need to overdress in order to still be recognised as glam, and not just following the fashion. Ah well, they'll all get over it soon enough, knowing how fickle fashion is these days! :P

I have noticed the genre becoming more popular, I blame Steel Panther really, kids are getting back into hair metal etc.

I also feel like I have to over dress so I don't look like I'm just following... xD

It's better than under dressing like I do. Haha.

For dudes, it's a whole lot easier to look glam, usually... Girls are teasing their hair all over the world for different 'styles' nowadays...

Well if you have the desire to look more glam, you can do it... the hair will help a whole whole lot. Haha

I've always had the feeling it would be easier for guys - I mean, as soon as you grow your hair out, you're considered some sort of alternative. Just chuck in some animal print and a bandana and you're identifiable! But for girls - so many people tease their hair, so many people wear leather and animal print, you sort of have to do everything to keep your identity.
I don't mind too much, it's fun glamming up, but sometimes I wish I could be a bit lazier but still get recognition for my style, ya know?

I blame Steel Panther a bit too for the revival, in terms of it becoming fashionable again and making those originally into the music and style seem like they're just following the trend. Though if I saw anyone dressed like a member of Steel Panther out and about I'd assume they're in fancy dress (actually see that a fair bit round here). You know someone's style is genuinely influenced by their taste when you can still see their originality in it, so easy to spot the trend followers.

And another point on the whole reality show thing...maybe if these musicians were not getting back into the mainstream by doing these shows they wouldn't be enabled enough to carry on their music careers in the way they are? I guess by staying popular they can justify worldwide tours and new albums, plus they're reaching a new audience so picking up a new generation of fans which will continue their success. Just trying to figure out how they can justify such pointless endeavors, apart from the money of course. Anyone agree? Or could we still have all these bands still around without that kind of publicity?

I love Steel Panther, but I do agree with you here.

I think they'd still be around - metal generally as a genre tends to have cult-like followers. Maybe not to the same extent, but regardless of how publicised some musicians are coming for different reasons, people would still find and enjoy them. For example, I listen to a lot of bands which most people wouldn't know - I stumbled upon them myself, (with the help of the internet of course) and that was in no way influenced by other media.
They're in it for the money, and sure it's probably helped them career wise, but even if they didn't do it they'd still be hanging on.

Yeah I don't think they need that kind of publicity to carry on. I know plenty of people who have been fans of the old rock bands for 30+ years and others who are recent fans who are supporting their tours and new music. I'd be interested though to go to a Poison concert and see what kinds of fans they have these days. Like if their younger fans are genuinely into the music or were just exposed to them by recent publicity. As I'm in the UK not sure what band's fan bases are like elsewhere. I've seen WASP and Whitesnake and noticed a clear majority of older fans, then with the more mainstream Slash and Motley Crue a very varied crowd with plenty of young'uns.

Also wondering what role bands like Vains of Jenna and Crashdiet are playing in keeping old bands active. I know they're certainly keeping the image alive. Though personally very unimpressed with their music...can anyone recommend one of these newer bands that don't have such a commercial sound, so definitely not anything like Reckless Love.

Well, I'm seeing Bret Michaels opening for the Crue in 2 months, I'm 17 and keen as hell! (Aussie here, by the way). There's certainly a growing crowd of younger glam fans, and from all the ones I know, we all got into it without shit reality television. I've been to quite a few concerts, and there's generally been a huge variation in age - I'm usually one of the younger ones, but there's plenty of people in their late teens/early 20s.

Personally, I don't think they have too much of an impact. I only even started listening to them relatively recently, and although the music is decent, it's too different from 80s glam to do it justice. It might encourage a few people to give the older stuff a listen, but eh, I don't see it as being too important musically mportant. Although, that might be because I'm stubbornly stuck in the 80s and can't relate to all these other young'uns!

Oo nice! Wish they were coming my way.
I guess all the touring these 80s bands are doing lately is helping reach a younger audience then. Just thinking of the main rock festivals over here in the past few years, Download in particular. They've had Def Leppard headline twice in the past few years as well as Whitesnake. Last year was full of bands like Cinderella, Slash, Enuff Z'nuff, Y&T, and Steel Panther. So good way to expose people to their music.

As for the new bands I agree it's too different to do justice to the original genre. Just seems like they've been pre-packaged to become a new part of today's mainstream rock aimed at teens. Though as much as I love 80s I wouldn't mind finding something new that has the same energy and attitude, just because I'll still need gigs to go to in 20+ years time by bands that aren't OAPs by then :P

It does help expose new people to the music, but I think most of the people who are going to stick around and watch them perform are already familiar with them. Not saying that no one new is gonna come along, but I very rarely see new bands at festivals because I go with certain acts in mind, and don't really pay attention to much else. I sure appreciate them all still touring though! :D

As a genre itself, I'm fine with these modern glam bands, but I really don't connect them with the proper stuff (not to belittle them, but ya know). I know exactly what you mean about the energy - I'm sure these guys love what they do and all, but for me, 80s glam was the best era for attitude, energy, and being badass.
Oh god, when I'm older I won't have many bands to see. That's depressing. Least I'm getting a lot in now!

    Yep!
I'm glad to be catching most of them these days, they still have the energy and there's still a bit of eye candy :P Maybe not so much with Vince Neil and Axl Rose...but Steven Tyler is a good example with him being 63, and David Coverdale still looking good at 59. Oh and Dio rocked when I saw him in 2009. My prediction is that by 2030 99% of the gigs I go to are gonna be tribute bands. It's at around 20% already :?

Seems like there's varying opinions on the issue of 'nu glam' - http://glamrock.com/nu-glam-is-it-real-or-fake/ ...I'm just gonna compare it to 'nu metal', both awful attempts at modernizing genres.

I've got Alice Cooper, Motorhead, Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Guns n Roses under my belt, not too bad for someone born in the mid 90s, haha. They're all doing wonderfully well for their ages, but they can't last forever. Gonna be a pity, but I'm glad I'm at least old enough to have caught the tail end of it.
'Nu' things suck, but I can see how people like it/are in favour of it.

The world just needed a brake from partying for a few decades and Jack Daniels needed to re-stock since they were drunk dry in the 80's. And now the world is starting to get over its 20 year long hangover and is starting to get ready to party again :D . Haha. But seriously, I think people are just board with this shit new music. There is nothing exciting about it and each track just sounds the same as the next.

lol its funny i saw motley crue when the came out here (australia ^^) and did i get a shock. so many young fans who were dressed like it was the 80's and who were enjoying the music and the good night. Probably 60% + there were 18 -25, so it was good to see, all us youngbloods will get to experience the party that was the 80's in some way during this decade ^^
