I like the Genere from what I've heard of it in passing. (I also like Goth Chix, haha) I'd like to hear a bit more of it, though. Anyone know any bands I should check out?
If you could reccomend like, 3 bands to check out as an introduction, that'd help a lot
Good question. There are so many goth bands to choose from. I played in a gothic metal band and spent many hours DJing goth, cyber and industrial as well as glam, rock and metal.
The history of goth music starts around the late 70s with bands such as the Cure, Sisters Of Mercy, Bauhaus, Siouxsie And The Banshees and even Joy Division. The 80s saw bands such as The Mission, The Cult, Fields Of The Nephilim and many more. The 90s also has its fair share of bands. I cannot comment on the 2000 scene.
Goth music has evolved over the years merging with rock, metal and synth pop to form many variants. It depends on how you look at the genre, some purists will argue over the true identity of goth music, but for me I accept all forms.
I will post more on this subject later but for now, I think you should start at the beginning.
Avenged Sevenfold's album, Wakeing the Fallen, is a really good gothic album before they eventually sold out.
i know it seems like we are never coming back. i know it feels like we r never coming back. you tryed ur best and you knew it wouldnt last. they were the words they wrote on her casket!
I'd say Siouxsie and The Banshees, the Smiths (not truly gothic, but listened to by a lot of goths) Alien Sex Fiend, and The Cure are pretty crucial to the development. I would say that Avenged Sevenfold is not technically gothic rock
Quite right, haha. My family thought I was listening to Duran Duran when I had Wasteland playing.
I just bought 'The Nephilim' by Fields of Nephilim and 'Gods Own Medicine' by The Mission. Gonna' get albums by Sisters of Mercy and The Cult next. Awesome.
I don't like how HIM is considered goth.I love them, especially the entire Dark Light album.I think a really underrated goth band is Paradise Lost.and I also like 69 Eyes who u have to get used to listening to cuz of the singers dark Peter Steele/Warrel Dane voice

heres my recommendation--on the american side of things (as opposed to the bat cave in london), people like rozz williams started the death rock scene in LA with bands like christian death. only theatre of pain was the only album with the original lineup, then rozz joined gitane demone and david valor under the same name, he left after ashes and catastrophe ballet and the sound quickly evolved into something radically different
moving forward half a decade, in the mid 80s the swans(theyre actually more industrial) did a side project called the world of skin. the music is very different from both the swans and classic goth, it is PURE BEAUTY
This is a great thread, and, thank you SickThing for that excellent graphic collection about the various subgenres of goth.It makes me wonder where I fit in there.I see all types represented at my current favorite club!
My dress,at this club,is even sluttier than usual-theres NO dress code.Often I see gals in their bras.I've also seen thongs,I've seeen "tittie tape"....Once I saw a man in Underoos and slippers and wearing a cape!
I have mostly favored the metal and industrial sides of Goth music.I find them more exciting.I love to dance, and I love looking at beautiful people. And I think the most beautiful people go to Metal and Goth clubs!
I think the next Type O Negative video posted should be one of the not-funny ones."My Best Friend's Girlfriend" is not a usual kind of song by them. Its not a BAD song, but to introduce that awesome band to people I might suggest "Black # 1" and "Christian Woman".
