Alice are best known for 'alternative' rock and metal which was hugely popular in the early to mid 90's.

I like Facelift and Dirt, but they must have 2-3 albums worth of demos from the early days. The material from around 88-89 is the strongest. Their sound at this stage could be described as a slightly heavier version of Guns 'N Roses

    Whatcha gonna do?

    Chemical Addiction

    King of the Kats

    Suffragette City (Bowie cover)

Can't have you blues (Probably my favourite)

Even a couple of cuts from the '90 debut facelift may be of interest.

The funk-metalish- I know something (Bout you)

Put you down (A great rockin' song)

The debut is littered with quite a few glamish licks and some killer riffs, but lyrically it's quite a dark record. (Not nearly as bleak as the record to come, however.) I don't think it's fair this band always got lumped into the grunge category.

I've also got a bunch of studio recorded demos from around '86/ '87.

I love Dirt. It's not what I typically listen to, but it's a classic album. Thanks for all the video links. 8)

    I'm not big on them.
In fact I LOATHED them for quite awhile, and hated Lane Staley's voice...it has that sort of "old southern guy complaining on the porch" quality like Eddie Vedder, Wieland on the early STP album, and that Godsamack guy. I've never liked that sort of timbre/accent/affectation.
But.... they do have some decent songs, especially towards the end.
I liked I Stay Away, and the song with the Cure-like lead bassline....the name escapes me.

Alice In Chains rocks...anyone who doesn't like them is lacking. During the shitty grunge years, they and Soundgarden are the only ones that really rocked...it wasn't grunge. Stone Temple Pilots had some great songs, but Alice In Chains is timeless. Jerry Cantrell is a true guitar god and very underrated.

Alice In Chains is fucking great. Its a shame Layne is dead. I fiund his voice to be great and the band is tight. I also agree that Jerry Cantrell is one hell of a guitar player. From that era i'd have to say the only bands I really like are Alice

I have to agree with you WhyteChocl8, but one correction I have is that Godsmack is not from that era. Godsmack actually took their name from a song by Alice In Chains entitled Godsmack. But they were a good few years after.

I guess you are right Seattle1014 I think Godsmack got thrown into the Nu-Metal genre which they are not they are just a really good hard rock/heavy metal band. I seen them twice and I always enjoyed them. How is the new singer of Alice In Chains? Im sure he is no Layne Stayley but he must be pretty good if they cameback to play. Hell, I think that Jerry Cantrell has a great voice himself.

Yah, Godsmack is a really good band. I've seen them a few times too including the Ozzfest and opening for Black Sabbath. The lead singer for Alice In Chains truly isn't Layne Staley, but he is a good fit. He plays guitar as well...he's pretty talented and I guess as close to Layne's voice as you could get. Jerry ought to know...huh?

    I LOVE ALICE IN CHAINS!!
I don't care what people say-
I love 90's grunge as well as 80's glam.
I actually listen to a lot of 90's bands,
like Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.
Grunge did not kill glam. Music just evolved,
there's no use in blaming it on great bands like Alice In Chains.

I like their cover of Suffragette City, I actually started listening to Bowie because of that, prior I think I only really knew The Man Who Sold The World (because Nirvana covered it) and Rebel Rebel.

I love AIC, I think I have all of their albums including Unplugged, as well as the DVD, Music Bank videos and Nona Tapes. I was crushed when the news of his death came out. I mourned for quite awhile, I even had memorial in my room for him, a poem, drawing of him, everything.
I grew up hearing them all the time when I was younger. I remember how much I loved the Heaven Beside You video, it would always come on MTV.
    Thanks for the post!

Alice In Chains actually started out as a glam metal band called Alice N' Chainz. That's why the videos above sound so good.

Dirt is a very good album :)

I often hear people describe them as similar to Gn'R which is something i've never quite figured out.

They and Soundgarden are about the only grunge bands I can listen to without envying the hearing impaired. Alice & Chains are hardly even a grunge band. Especially the first album. If anything, they sound like a mix between Black Sabbath and Guns & Roses with more of a bluesy vibe to them.

These guys were considered "Grunge" but I thought of them as more metal. I loved these guys they just flat out rocked out. If I was pissed off, sad or in a bad mood these guys went into my stereo. I played the shit out of "Dirt" in Junior High. That is the same with Soundgarden, when they came out everybody I knew labeled them grunge but I never thought that at all. They were metal. Nirvana and Pearl Jam were grunge.

It was a pity that they were lumped in as a just a grunge trend when they were a band in their own. They were unique cos of Layne's voice which had that James Hetfield. They were better than every other band in Seattle at the time.
