Intro (Edit)

Winger is an Americal glam metal band. The band was formed in New York City in 1987. The band is most well known for their songs, Seventeen, Headed For A Hearbreak, and Miles Away. They had two platinum albums, which were, Winger, and In The Heart of The Young.

After Kip Winger did some backing vocals on Twisted Sister’s, Love Is For Suckers, album, he decided to form his own band. Kip Winger was a former member of Alice Cooper’s band, as were two of his three recruited band members. He recruited lead guitarist, Reb Beach and rhythm guitarist and keyboardist, Paul Taylor. The final member of the band was drummer, Rod Morgenstein. Kip Winger took on the roles of lead vocalist and bassist for his band.

In 1988, the band got signed to Atlantic Records, and in the same year, they released their debut album called, Winger. The album spawned the successful singles, Headed For A Heartbreak, and, Seventeen. The two singles peaked at number 19 and 26, respectively, on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album itself peaked at number 21 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album went Platinum.

To support the album, the band toured for over a year with bands like Cinderella, Scorpions, Tesla, Skid Row, Poison, and Bon Jovi, to name a few. In 1990, the band was nominated by the American Music Award for ‘Best New Heavy Metal Band’, but didn’t win the award.

In The Heart of The Young, was the band’s next album. The album was released on July 24, 1990. The album went Platinum and featured the hit songs, Can’t Get Enuff, Easy Come Easy Go, and, Miles Away. The song, Easy Come, Easy Go, spent 11 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number 41. The song, Can’t Get Enuff, spent 15 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number 12. The final single, Miles Away, spent 22 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number 12. The album itself peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The release of the album followed with a 13 month world tour. The band played with bands such as, Slaughter, ZZ Top, Extreme, KISS, and Scorpions, to name a few.

The band didn’t release their next album until May 18, 1993. The album was called, Pull. The album marked a change in sound for the band. Instead of their typical radio friendly, pop-metal songs, they started incorporating a more aggressive type of metal with this album. The album peaked at number 83 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The album was recorded with just Kip Winger, Reb Beach, and Rod Morgenstein. Rhythm guitarist and keyboardist, Paul Taylor left the band after their previous tour. After the album was completed, the band recruited John Roth to play rhythm guitar for them for the tour.

History (Edit)

In 1993, Kip Winger put the band on hold because he decided to go solo when the band didn’t get many gig offers. Kip has said this about the band’s hiatus: “You know, it was kind of like we never really broke up. We just figured we’d come back at some point. It took quite a bit longer than I figured it would but we’ve all been really busy doing other stuff. We did the Poison thing in 2002 when we reformed the band and everything.” Source: http://www.antimusic.com/morley/07/Winger.shtml

In 2001, all of the original members, including Paul Taylor and John Roth, reunited to record a new song for their greatest-hits compilation, The Very Best of Winger. The album mostly included songs from the first three Winger albums, Winger, In The Heart of The Young, and Pull. There is one new song called, On The Inside, which was a left-over riff from the, Pull, recording sessions. The other semi-new song, Hell To Pay, was a bonus track for the Japanese release of Pull.

In the summer of 2002, all 5 member went on a tour with Poison. They toured the U.S. and Canada. After the tour, they disbanded.

In May of 2006, the band released a press-release announcing that they had reformed, but without one of their original members. The missing member was Paul Taylor. They announced that they would record another album and tour Europe. The new line-up for the band was, Kip Winger, vocals and bass guitar, Reb Beach and John Roth, both playing guitar and singing backing vocals. Rod Morgenstein was playing the drums and the new keyboardist was Cenk Eroglu.

The band’s next album was called, IV. It was the first studio album since 1993’s, Pull. The album was released on October 20, 2006, but Frontiers Records. The album did not chart. In support of the album, the band embarked on a nine-country tour of Europe called, the Winger IV Tour.

Demo Anthology was released by the band on July 17, 2007 by Cleopatra Records. The album is a compilation of hits and unreleased demos by the band. All the songs are from the 1988 sessions of the recording of the album, Winger, to the 1993 recording sessions for the album, Pull.

The band’s next studio release was, Karma. The album was released on October 16, 2009 in Europe and October 27, 2009 in the United States. Kip Winger has said that the title of the album comes from the band completing their full musical circle. The album did not chart. The band toured to support the album.
