Intro (Edit)
Mr. Big is an American hard rock super group. The band was formed in 1988. The band’s biggest hits were “Green-Tinted Sixties Mind” and “To Be With You.” They were mostly popular in Japan. They came to be known as one of the most revered “super groups” in America.
The band’s original line-up consisted of Paul Gilbert, Pat Torpey, Billy Sheehan and Eric Martin. By 1989, the band had signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records, and that same year, they released their debut album.
The self-titled debut by Mr. Big didn’t gain much success. The album peaked out at number 46 on the Billboard 200 chart. Their only single, “Addicted To That Rush” peaked at number 39 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The album quickly was a smash hit in Japan.
The band finally broke into the mainstream with their second album, Lean Into It. Lean Into It was released in 1991. The success of the two ballads, “To Be With You” and “Just Take My Heart” helped the album peak at number 15 on the Billboard 200 chart. The song, “To Be With You” was the bands first and only single to reach number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 1993, the band released the album, Bump Ahead. The single, “Wild World,” was the only success from the album. It peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 33 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks, and number 12 on the Top 40 Mainstream.
History (Edit)
The year 1996 saw the release of the album Hey Man. Although their song, “Take Cover” peaked at number 1 in Japan, the album was a commercial failure.
Paul Gilbert left the band in 1997. He wanted to pursue a solo career and ultimately, reform Racer X. Richie Kotzen, formerly of Poison, was Gilbert’s replacement.
With the new line-up, the band released another album, and in 2000, Get Over It was released. The band released two singles for the album. “Superfantastic” and “Static.” The two songs only charted in Japan, and their peak on the charts were number 97 and 66 respectively.
Actual Size was released in 2001. The band released three singles for this album. “Where Are They Now,” “Shine,” and “Arrow.” “Shine” ranked the highest of all three singles. It ranked number 1 on the Japan Oricon Single Chart. Other than that, the album didn’t have much success.
Increasing tensions in the band lead to a commercial decline. Although the band wanted to call it quits, they had contractual obligations for another Japanese tour. After the tour, the band broke-up in 2002.
Update (Edit)
On February 1, 2009 the band announced that they’re reuniting for a Japanese tour. They have reformed for a ten show tour throughout Japan. The tour will begin on June 5 in Sapporo and end June 21 in Yokohama. Paul Gilbert said about the tour that “…everyone’s heart is in the right place, and we are thrilled to have a second chance to play our music, hang out, and be a rock band again.”
